Aaron Franklin says he doesn't eat Barbecue

When I ask him who else in the country is getting barbecue right, he drops the bomb. "I don’t really know. I don’t eat barbecue," he says. I laugh nervously, but Franklin doesn’t waver. "I don't eat that stuff, but I love to cook it. ........"I've worked real hard for this dad bod and I'm keeping it this way," he laughs, before admitting, "I don't know. I'm just surrounded. It's really heavy, fatty, salty food. But I'll take a bite, I taste it all the time."
He does add:
quote:
If I'm in a special place like up in the Carolinas hanging out with Sam Jones (whose family has been in the BBQ biz for more than 70 years), I’m absolutely going to get a pork sandwich. If I'm hanging out with Rodney Scott (a world-renowned BBQ chef from Charleston), I'm absolutely going to get some of that pulled pork.

So he does eat bbq. Just not his own. That’s not super surprising. He cooks it everyday.

I keep hearing Parish’s owner doesn’t drink beer, so...

Honestly, if I worked every day in a BBQ joint, I would not want to touch the stuff either. I love BBQ, but after I've gone on a tear at one of these places, I don't want to think about eating it again for a good while.
It makes sense what he says. I think the author took him a tad too literally. Of course he eats BBQ, but I doubt he goes home and cooks it for a family meal or takes his family to another bbq joint often.

I get it. I worked in a brewpub that served craft beer and pizza...I smelled it so often that I couldn't eat pizza again until like 4 months after I left. Just wasn't appealing when I could eat literally anything else.
Strangely enough, I never had an issue drinking the beer

Apparently he eats his own too, all the time. He just doesn't make himself a plate of it. I think when they said he doesn't eat BBQ they really meant he eats a shitload of BBQ.

Ya, I could see how he'd be tired of his own stuff. I'd imagine even just tasting it each day would get old after awhile.

When i do a long smoke, i'm the same. I love the taste, but if you are around it all the time, come serving time, i don't really want to eat it. Also, i've typically drank multiple beers by that point, so i'm not that hungry.

Same here. After that smoke has been in the air, on your clothes, in your hair, and seeped inside the house, I might eat a little and gorge on the sides.

My cigar partner a Master Cigar Roller smokes VEEERY little.
he claims that he want to maintain his palate open to taste and too much smoking would kill it.
Can this be the same with some of this people not eating the type of food they cook ??

Once I got into smoking BBQ at home, I pretty much quit eating it at restaurants. I like it but can get burned out, and I don't want to waste my eating it on suspect restaurant stuff. But, like Franklin, if I go somewhere special (like Stanley's in Tyler) I will order it.

He’s up to his arse neck in Q 24/7.
Can’t blame him for making that statement.

Makes total sense to me.
The wife used to manage a pizza place, we could never order pizza because when she was off of work the site and smell of pizza would make her loose her appetite. Thankfully she is out of the industry now and we can have pizza like a normal family.
