Remember a few years back when we had a "Chopped" style food challenge where we tried to take weird ingredients and make a dish out of them?

What if we tried to simplify it and just select one main protein with no restrictions other than the star of a main dish is the selected protein. Everyone can make their favorite dish and post pictures and recipes. We can vote on on our favorite one, or not.

We can give aspiring chefs a one week window, and the winner, should we choose one can pick the next protein. The only restriction would be that the protein be something that most people would have access and be interested in cooking. It can be specific, like "chicken thighs", or general, like "chicken".

I think this would be fun because more people would participate, and the point would be to see other people's take on dishes we already do or to discover completely different recipes and techniques we have never used. I also think it will be interesting to compare dishes done in the oven, fried, grilled, or sous vide.

Thoughts?

I think it needs to be restricted to a particular cut as some are easier than others to prepare. If is was simply pork, the dishes would be anywhere from boudin to a crown rib roast.

It's really about creativity and plating in my opinion. No one gets to taste it, and they won't know if its overcooked or undercooked.

We gotta have one odd ball ingredient in it, that is what makes it creative on how to use the ingredient

I’m down.

What are the requirements? Post the recipe along with photos throughout the process?

I tend to agree with this. You want creativity and differences, but comparing boudin to a crown rib roast is a bit much. Plus, we can do this longer if it's NY Strip this week, skirt steak next week, etc, as opposed to beef this week, chicken next week, and we'll run out of challenges in 5-6 weeks.

I think people will be able to tell whether they will like it or not based on the pics AND the recipe. If the chicken breast is dry, that's doesn't mean the recipe is bad. The idea is to share good recipes. If your recipe requires 57 ingredients and 5 hours of prep, people will probably be turned off. If the recipe is easy to prepare, has ingredients that impart flavor, AND it looks good, then people will respond to that.

I think that about covers it. KISS.

I think this should be push for people to pull their best recipes out and show them to the board. If the recipe calls for skirt steak, and you have a great recipe that you maybe haven't don in a while, then let's do it.

I would propose chicken thighs as the first ingredient. Versatile and hard to screw up, but you had better bring your 'A" game because chicken thighs are a blank canvas for flavor, so you had better bring the seasonings.

Do you limit it to just that dish or does it have to have something like two or three sides along with the meal?

Yes, I would limit it to one dish, although the sides probably enhance the plating...
