Why would you be on the levee during record river levels in the first place? Dealing with arse hats like you distract the officials from more important duties they are in charge of.

I did the same thing for the same reason on the Louisiana side of Vicksburg. Almost got arrested. Just taking a few photos of a record setting, historic event. Thought it was worth the risk.

I was not being an arse-hat or wise-arse to the officer. He asked what I was doing and my response was "just taking a few pictures." He told me the levees were closed and my reply was "yes sir, I'm on my way off right now."
That being said, I was only walking on the levee with my camera on a tripod, He was in a 4X4 pickup on top of the levee. Who do you think was doing more damage to the levee?
arse-HOLE!!!!!

I don't want to put any more logs on the fire, but I will say this.
The police are there for the safety of the public including the person trying to take photos. This is a historic event and all agencies are in prevention mode. The levees are stressed unlike any other level they will get in our lifetimes. That being said, the person taking the photos does not OWN the levee nor have any rights to that property. I assure you there will be UNLIMITED photos and documentation of this entire flood event after the fact. Getting a "trophy" photo to say "Yeah, I was there" is unncessesary. Also, would you mind if someone came onto YOUR property without your permission to take photos as they pleased?
Someone earlier did nail it on the head however. It is more a concern for terrorism. It would not take much to make these levees fail, and everyone is on HIGH alert for ANY type of suspicious threat.

Come to Baton Rouge and try. You'll be held for hours and questioned by the Feds, as my sister was. She mouthed off to them and it got real. Ended up having to get a friend, who is an attorney to go down and straighten things out. Not a fun Saturday, but she learned a valuable life lesson. Probably on the no fly list now, though.
