I don't worry too much unless Morganza has to be opened...

The Bonnet Carre will be open first then if needed the Morganza Spillway will be opened. Opening the Morganza Spillway will become very political. That water will destoy farm land and will eventually make its way to the Atchafalay River which will increase its levels thus threatening Morgan City.

You can bank on the BC spillway being opened sometime next week. Morganza will be opened only if Baton Rouge is threatened.

It was just a lame attempt at humor, GT.

You said "in depth" on a thread about flooding, so I responded with an "I see what you did there."

My sense of humor is sometimes kinda warped.

It doesn't get more political than activating the Bird Point - New Madrid Floodway which was used once in 1937. That is some of the most fertile farmland in the Mississippi River delta.

That water must pass through Louisiana so get ready for it.

Probably a dumb question, but why wouldn't they let some more water come into Bayou Lafourche. They are already talking about doing it in the future. Wouldn't this help relieve some of the H2O?

Apparently all the Arkansas side levees are now closed to the public. With the Arkansas, White, Black, and other rivers being so high and backed up my guess is that we will get the first breach on the Arkansas side if it gets to that point. Look at the estimates for yesterdays precipitation for Arkansas and it gets pretty scary.

I hope someone has a video camera watching this because it is going to be quite a sight. Unfortunately this is going to do a lot of damage and a lot of people are going to lose their homes and possessions due to it.

Trying to follow the water if Morganza is opened. I'm only a little familiar with that area. How does the water cross hwy 10 east of Melville. I've never been there. It is raised like 190?

In all seriousness...I was moving to a condo about a half mile from that flooded school at the end of the month in east Memphis. Landlord said that my place will probably flood if it gets any higher.

There is a guide levee west of Melville (east of Port Barre and Palmetto...it may be visible on Google Maps) . Flood waters will only fill that floodplain in the worst of situations....by topping or breaking of the levee immediately west of the Atch. River. The secondary floodplain is called the West Atchafalaya. Simmsport, Melville, and Krot Springs are in
that floodway, but I am pretty sure there are ring levees around those towns.

The path I'm looking at on the DOTD map is all East of the Atch River. It shows the levees and the spillway. Looks like hwy 10 is dead in the path.

I'm looking at that in Google Earth right now. There's quite a bit of non-elevated homes in that floodway. Whose bright idea was is to build a home in a floodway and who approved something like that? News outlets are reporting that the pipes are being filled as I type this. SOURCE

Opening B Lafourche would be like taking a gallon of water out of a swimming pool.

B Lafourche can handle maybe 10000cfs, wide open. The Mississippi is flowing at 1 million right now.
