Where exactly is the Fuse Plug Levee? I'm trying to look for it on Google Earth.

I think it runs east/west just north of hwy 1 from Hamburg to Simmesport.

From the Levee District site:

quote:

Bayou Des Glaises Fuse Plug Levee
8.1 miles of fuse plug levee at the head of the West Atchafalaya Basin Floodway, extending on the right descending bank of the bayou from Hamburg to Simmesport, where it joins the West Atchafalaya River Levee.

Worst case, the channels flipping, sounds way worse than Katrina. The Federal Government would never allow this to occur. Gas would be $10 a gallon as a result.

I have really enjoyed (and appreciate) this thread. However, I have a question that does not appear to have been asked/answered:

As you may recall from Katrina, one of the reasons for overtopping (and ultimate failure) of the floodwalls/levees in NO was that subsidence had actually made them lower than was thought (i.e., a 20 foot floodwall was actually only 18.7 feet due to subsidence).

My understanding is that essentially the entirety of South Louisiana (the old MR delta) is subsiding. Do the current levee heights we are discussing take this into consideration?

That's a good question. I work with a frickin smart engineer from Vidalia who has plenty family/property in the area so he has read and researched EVERYTHING and seems to buy into the idea that the levees will hold at 65 feet BUT... for how long. He mentioned that the recent new projection adds 2 days to the crest and that could mean bad news. Also, the possibility of 67 feet makes the levees pretty worthless.

I only read the baton rouge projections. I don't care if Natchez becomes the new Atlantis.

UDTiger to answer your question, they are doing surveys as we speak. I don't think they know the answer to your question.

Like someone posted earlier, there is a reason Natchez is the oldest settlement on the Mississippi River. Vidalia, especially the new riverfront, is in for bad times.
