I am surprised by the attitude of people saying that we should let a historic city like Cairo where there are still a few thousand people living get destroyed to save farmland in an area known as the floodway. And yes, I've been to Cairo, I know its a shithole.

You bought land, farmed, built a house and placed your silos in the floodway. Deal with the consequences of it.

Tots, this is shite your grandparents have never seen. I just hope there isn't a levee breech in SELA. This shite is real and really fricking bad.

This is a good point. Someone mentioned a Harvard attorney indicating that easements were not legit on 50K of the floded acres, but I am not sure. I feel fairly sure that the easements in the Morganza Floodway are legit. Just a matter of Morgan City.

I'd get rid of an uneducated, un-productive shithole before a place that provides from the rest of the country. However, I am also politically incorrect

When the river is about to crest, I'm 99% sure they will close down the levee running path. However, will it be illegal to park on the side of river road somewhere and walk up the levee to take a look at the water? I'm very curious to see what a 48ft crest looks like all the way up the levee

I was just saying this today. I want to get pics and stuff but I'm not sure they would let us get up there.

Dig down two feet and it is damn good dirt. Above that it is so sandy that the ground has been abandoned by the owners.

I have a good friend that has roughly one thousand acres on th Ohio River side in So Illinois. He comes out with a big ripping plow and turns that soil over breakin into the hard pan. Only bad thing about it is for a couple years your tractor will sink if it's real wet.lol

It was about 2 feet from the top of the levee in 2008.

Yea I have been following this thread, I'm scared as to what could happen. I want to go take pictures around the 20th when the water is near its peak. I live on Brightside...a break near LSU would be catastrophic to the university and its students

I don't see how they can patrol all of that levee. Take a left on River Road from Brightside and it is all farmland down that way. I'm sure ppl could quickly pull to the side of the road, run up, snap some pics, and leave before a patrol got to you

The people who built and settled in Cairo bought land in a flood plain between the two major rivers of the United States.

There are no cemeteries in Cairo because the water table is too high. Did you know that?

They made it what it is and the Missouri farmers made their property what it is. Who did the better job? Perhaps the citizens of Cairo should be the ones who must deal with it.

I was born in Cairo.

I don't think you understand.....people walking on the levee is the least of their problems.

I hope I'm wrong, but parts those levees will be topped if the latest projections are right.
The Advocate says BR is protected to 47.3 feet in some places. River is cresting at 48.9.

In BR?

I was up there running pretty much every day back then and at its highest it was still prolly 10 feet from the top. It was still cool as shite though.

it's getting deep here. the thing that bothers me the most is they moved the BBQ festival from the river to the fairgrounds.

That was me.

It's not that the easements are illegitimate the fact is that the easements were never even procured.

If you own property in a spillway then run an abstract.

Pretty big problem if someone wants to toss a grenade or similar.

Some idiot who wants to do some destruction only needs a shovel (if the water is really that high) or home made grenade to frick the city of BR. I think keeping people off the levee would be a priority
