I think I read that this will be 7.5 feet higher than the floods of 1927 which were record floods.

So the midwest floods in the late 90's were not record floods?
I've been to St. Louis! i've seen the plaque at the arch!

but the levees are much higher today than they were 80 years ago. which will give you higher river levels. yes we may very well get higher levels, but the amount of water that flowed in '27 will be hard to beat

they would split them up between some of the other prisons.
there is some higher ground within angola where they will usually build tents to store the prisoners
it has happened several times before, once being within the last 10 years i believe

They also didn't have levees at all along many parts of the river

If they have to open the morganza spillway, there's also a chance that they won't be able to close it, which would likely allow the MS river to divert it's course to the atch river. All that crap is old and, if I had to guess, poorly maintained.
I doubt this will happen, just throwing out some more SHTF stuff.

Apparently the mods dont think that the largest flood since 1927, and maybe bigger than that deserves any attention.
That's because it doesn't affect htown.

On the Outdoor board they were discussing this. I think the consensus from most was that Morganza would most likely have to be opened and would cause huge problems if it couldn't be closed obviously changing the flow of the MS river.

What do the different levels represent. today, tomorrow, thurs, etc or what?
And why is Donaldsonville roughly 10 ft lower? for it being so close I didnt think it would differ that drastically?

Forecast for the river levels keep rising. Highest levels since the "Great Flood" of 1927/1973 depending on who's talking. Army Corps blew a levee last night in Missouri to take pressure off.
By the time the water gets here, they will probably have to open Morganza Spillway and Bonnet Carre Spillway. Unless the MR jumps course (my favorite theory of the thread), or a levee breaks before they can open them, in which case it will be pure bedlam.

Apparently you missed my post saying that we're going to open the Weather Board specifically for this.
BTW, it's admins...not mods.

you'd be wrong
USACE does annual and 5-year inspections on all major structures and any major areas of concern are addressed

What do you want to know? The river is going to continue to rise until the 22nd of May and then make a slow fall.

Doesn't the river carry less volume due to being confined inside the levees and having no place for the sediments to go?

I didn't even question it before, but the way they just came out and said it worried me a bit.

i think they repainted the structure within the last couple of years which likely required raising the gates one by one
now that doesnt simulate water pressure against the gates, but it does show that the mechanisms are still in operation
