Hey Scottie, not sure if you saw my post couple pages back, but what is the possibility of flooding looking like in the central Ms Delta, like in the Indianola area, 25 miles east of the MR and Greenville.

Don't know much about up north but I do know record highs are expected everywhere.

Do yall think these farmers who have the crops ruined wont be getting government help?

Govt. payments have been scaled back over the last couple of years, but I'm sure there will be some kind of disaster payment that will be paid out. The problem is it's probably going to be too late for a number of people in AR, MS, and LA that are already in trouble after a couple of years ago.

eta: and don't take this as a pity potty deal. I know what you are getting at... It's just terrible timing. This was supposed to be the year that everything got back on track with high commodity prices.

You think it's just for the BC or both the BC and morganza?

I am not really sure what goes into their forecasts.

All I know is the B Carre is going to be opened when the flow reaches 1300kcfs at Red River Landing.

LINK

I do not think a decision has been made on Morganza yet. But it would not suprise me if it opened also.

The thinking is that the B Carre is opened to destress the levees and protect NOLA and the Morganza is opened to destress the levees and protect Baton Rouge.

From what I gather the concern is levee overtopping not levee failure.

The Deadly Confluence is a good fictional read in regards to what is going on right now with the river. It is about the KGB blowing up the Old River Control Structure and diverting the MS River down the Atchafalaya. That along with Rising Tide which is a fantastic book.

I'm sure we'll see it open with the crest at 47.5'

It'll be interesting to see what happens with the ORCS

Overtopping leads quickly to failure.

Only if scouring occurs on the protected side. With a minimal overtop that does not produce much downward velocity onto the toe of the protected side the threat of failure should be rather minimal to zero.

That's one of the concerns in the southern part of the MS delta. At the Steele Bayou structure it is supposed to be good to 56 ft (Vicksburg) and the forecast is for 57.5... 1st grade math tells you that's bad.

Makes sense. From the very little I understand about how the levees are constructed, the river can't really get high enough to exert enough pressure to bust through it without going over the top first. I would be concerned with erosion if it stays high and rolling hard though.

The new crest for the Mississippi River in Natchez is suppose to be 65 feet on May 20th. That puts it over 8 feet of the 1973 flood.

As of now, it's still set for 47.5 on the 21st in BR. NOAA hasn't put out the new forecast for today yet.

Based on this estimate, when would the flooding actually begin? Last year, I was driving from MO to LA through Memphis, and with a little more rain, I could see how the Interstate could have been shut down in certain areas. Parts of Memphis were impossible to drive through in late April last year, and this sounds much worse.

Some charts will say when the river will hit flood stage. If not, you can look at how fast it's rising and estimate when it'll hit flood stage. shite will start happening very soon. The severity of it is uncertain and depends on a ton of variables.

I've already inquired about the Weather Board being opened up for this.

Should be interesting over the next few weeks.
