It ought to take days to count hundreds of millions of paper ballots that have everything from local to state to federal offices and misc stuff on them, and I'd be happier if we did it that way - sequester them under armed guard with no additional arrivals - but with many of them being digitally read - there is no reason we don't have a winner by midnight, except for shenanigans. We held elections in WWII and the winner was known before midnight. No technology involved.
