You could draw 99 of the powerful magic early in the game and attach it to your weapons and run through the game fairly easy. Its the same amount of grind you would put into any other. I loved how open world FF VIII was.

and your skills were maxed by level 70, so actually going over level 70 hurt you more than it helped you, because the other enemies would still get abilities past 70... there was that one EXTREMELY stupid 1 shot kill move in the final dungeon.. GDI I hated that move!

VIII was extremely good story wise, and I actually really REALLY enjoyed the draw system

damn, I keep hearing that the story is what's so wrong with FFVIII

nevertheless, I have heard enough good things about it on this board to give it a playthrough

Oder of my favorite is same as chronological order. 7 isn't the best pure RPG I've ever played (Chrono Trigger), but it's my favorite. The world is very engrossing, which makes up for the inconsistent story.

8 was fairly easy early on with the draw system, but it still had some monsters that were extremely difficult.

I only played about 20 hours of 9 before I lost a save game. It was solid, but I haven't touched it since then (10 or so years ago). This despite having played 7 and 8 about 4 times each in that time frame.

I almost never have to draw 100 of any spells

Most of the time you can get all of the magic you need from card mod breakdowns. I always get all of my endgame magic from the Hell draw points as well. So the only time I have to draw 100 of any spell is in the first half of disk one.

Final Fantasy VII might be the best FF of all of them, imo.

FFVII ranks as one of the greatest games of all time. It has everything you could possibly want in an RPG. VIII and IX are good in their own right but pale in comparison to VII. Sephiroth, Cloud, Aerith - all great characters who are memorable. Just talking about it makes me want to relive all 73 hours I spent playing this game.

Defeating the underwater Emerald WEAPON was one of the greatest achievements in my young gaming career.

Since you're enjoying VI right now, I'd go with IX. I wasn't a big fan of IX when I played it when it was released, but I played it again relatively recently and really really enjoyed it. It really is a well done throw back styled game, from the leveling up specific abilities to the character customization that doesn't necessarily allow for every character to become an ability carbon copy of each other.

VIII, to me, is the game of the three that has not aged well. While VII is no longer graphically impressive, it is easier to overlook the polygons then just the straight up poor resolution of VIII on modern TVs. But note that this might only be a problem if you're playing the old PS discs. I haven't downloaded them and played them since I still own the originals.

VII is quite the RPG accomplishment. And normally I'd say to go with VII first (for the same reasons already enumerated in this thread). But I also like VI more than VII (and I grew up idolizing II/IV so the Ye Olde Fantasy type really gives me a nostalgia rush) so I think IX will suit you better. Plus, IX has a killer soundtrack. Simply one of the best scored FF games in the series - which, I believe, is really saying something.

For the record, I'd say Earthbound is my favorite RPG, and I would heartily recommend that you go and figure out how to leave Onett and get to Twoson. The game is tremendous and you're missing out on a lot.

And if you're looking for something more new school that plays like polished old school, I'd recommend giving Dragon Quest IX on the DS a whirl.

Happy gaming. You've got some good choices there so as long as you eventually cover them all you'll be okay.

This wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. As long as you had Phoenix paired with final attack you wouldn't die. Cast KOTR and mimic it with everyone and you eventually defeat him.

The first 10 or so times I played him, he smoked me lol.

Also IX is the shite. Vivi is one of my all time favorite characters.

The thing about this was, at least for me, was you had to take a lot of time to level up the materia. I remember maxing out one mimic so that it would make a new one, then you had to level up KOTR to make sure that you could cast it multiple times. That shite took awhile. But before all that, you had to breed a gold chocobo which took a lot of racing time and resets to get the right chocobo to be born.

Can't go wrong with either 7 or 8, both had good stories and combat systems imo.

X was my favorite of the series

IX is the best balance between the VII and VIII, story is okay, combat and magic system are awesome and the game actually holds up to today's standards. (In my opinion)

My 2nd favorite FF game, behind FFVI.

I really wouldn't limit myself to just one or two titles in this series. They're really not that time consuming unless you try to do every special quest and find every ultimate weapon, etc etc.

IMO play them all
