Why do little kids like Sonic the Hedgehog?

Every little boy I know goes nuts over Sonic the Hedgehog and could care less about Mario, yet Sonic has been incredibly irrelevant in the video gaming space since at least the early 2000s.

Honestly, Mario has always been a bit of a shite protagonist. The games are great, but Mario himself is boring. As a kid, I loved the games, but didn't own a single thing with Mario on it, and wouldn't have at all been interested in a move or TV show just because it featured Mario.

Memes. Sonic himself is a massive meme in internet/gaming culture. I don't think anyone would argue that Mario has the better games. In fact, Sonic is a meme in part to the fact that some of his games are so bad that they're funny/good in a scuffed sort of way. Sonic 06 and Sonic Forces are good examples. People like the games ironically. As far as little kids are concerned, he's gotten a lot of spotlight lately and they aren't critical enough of games to care that Sonic games are bad.

There have been a bunch of Sonic cartoons. That's where my daughter and her friends learned about him in preschool or kindergarten. She loved the original cartoon with Steve Urkel doing the voice.

Yep and there's at least 2 of them on Netflix right now and kids burn thru Netflix content worse than adults

Imagine if Sega would get their heads out of their asses and develop a good Sonic game.
Sonic Team is worse than Xbox-era Rare now.
Sonic Mania doesn't really count as it was literally a fan game licensed by Sega.

Ironically, my favorite thing about the Sonic games on Genesis was how there was no countdown timer like all the NES Mario games so you could actually take your time and explore.

Well, I know for sure you had a 10 minute time limit for Sonic 2. Because as a kid, I found out how addicting slot machines are by running out of time in the casino level constantly doing the slot machine pinball thing. Lol
