re: Smart Thermostat Argument with HVAC Tech
Read the fine print. Remember in Texas the power companies were adjusting thermostats in the middle of the night to save power.

There is a forum for AC professionals and they all love the NEST because they get to go fix them after homeowners attempt to install themselves or burn up the units due to continuous restarts. Go research for yourself and don't take my word for it.

I installed a nest during wintertime and it worked fine. Come summer, I had an occasional issue with my AC failing to start. We went through a million different possibilities with multiple visits from 2 different hvac techs and an electrician. Turns out it was due to the nest and no c wire.

Easily able to get the rebate then remove your thermostat from the program.

Also, they haven't really been using that feature as much as they did in previous years. Summer has been "mild" relatively speaking I guess Program has been around for years.

re: Smart Thermostat Argument with HVAC Tech
So a little update on this with some further questions. Got the three Honeywell wifi thermostats in and went to install them. The first unit worked like it should and utilized the existing c wire. The other two had a c wire that was not being used with the old thermostats so I stripped and hooked it up to the new Honeywells which proceeded to not power up leading me to believe the c wire is not hooked up on the other end. Is there any work around or would this problem be solved using a Sensi wifi thermostat?

Just spoke with AC guy and made it sound as simple as hook one of the unused wires to the common on the unit then the thermostat should work with that wire. How difficult is that and will I kill myself?

It's not difficult if you know what you are doing. There are plenty of youtube videos that can help. Sometimes it's easier to spend a few bucks and pay the ac guy for a service call to come hook it up for you.

this rant about how he never recommends them and they will burn up the units etc.

Same ordeal here… replaced entire A/C system on a rental house. Gave the installer a Nest thermostat to install - he ranted and raved about how all the smart thermostats suck and will burn everything up - except for the Ecobee units they sell and have on the truck.

Bitch please. I told him to install the Nest or leave… no problems in over a year.

$500 ea for two ecobees installed on carrier infinity units. I can deal without wifi thermostats.

Just installed an ecobee myself with no issues in less than 30 minutes. If you have a C-wire already wired, it's very simple.

Have 3 nests across home and work. Easy to install and work great. Installed one for my workers as well. Simple.

Apparently there's nothing simple about Carrier Infinity systems. $50 job turns into a $500 job just because.

Very simple assuming you have easy access to the unit in your attic. Google your particular unit and c-wire and you should get some specific instructions on where the appropriate terminal is. Once you identify the correct terminal, it’s a 30 second job.

Just going by YouTube videos...but HVAC guys despise Nest

I'm BIL is over hvac maintenance for a huge hospital system and uses ecobee exclusively over nests. Just fyi

Yes, but notice I said “easy” access.
