Satriani....I don't get it...all the professional players who idolize him are all better than he is...

To be fair, I don't think I've ever heard somebody namecheck the Edge when talking about great guitarists. U2 come from a period when the mission statement of their genre (post punk/ new wave/ pre-alt rock, whatever) was to move away from guitar being the main focal point and create music where all sound aspects contribute equally. U2 was part of a resistant reaction to guitar-hero rock.

It's silly to even mention him at all in this context.

maybe so ... this is a very interesting question because you really have to seperate the guitar player from the band they are well known for ( or bands) and look at how technically sound they are ...there are 3 guitar players who changed the instrument so to speak and none of them should ever be considered overrated : Hendrix...EVH and Yngwie Malmsteen

And aside from Hendrix , i personally like others before Eddie and Yngwie but cannot deny them their place as game changers

Just don't see how EVH or SRV appear at all in this thread. They are perhaps the only two guitarists that can make a guitar sing.

Different but both were amazing musicians.

For my overrated list (just never game a "wow" or "sweet"):
Clapton
Jimi
Angus

Someone mentioned Mick Ralphs (Bad Company). Never thought of him as a great guitarist but Bad Co was a great rock band.

Brian May Isn't Good at Live Jamming With Other Guitarists

He's my all time favorite guitarist but doesn't have "live jamming" in his arsenal.

Not even Paul Stanley talks about Paul Stanley's prowess on the guitar.

It’s not about how he plays, but what. It’s always very musical and emotive. Excellent story telling through instrumental music is hard to do, but it comes naturally to him.

Surfing with the alien was really influential in my playing.

After watching a few old videos of Roy Clark and Glen Campbell I would say most of the guitarists save EVH and maybe Yngwie are overrated. If some on this board have never caught Roy or you think he was just some Saturday night country singer with a guitar....check him out, especially his playing of Malaguena. He puts most of the others to shame. His duet with Glen Campbell and Riders of the Storm is great too. Watch Glen shred it on a 12 string and then watch Roy play his part on the 6 string....few can match them

Exactly - Satriani has a way of emoting certain feelings and experiences through his playing. Is he technically as good as Steve Vai? Maybe not but I sure enjoy listening to Satriani's music more than Vai's.

Someone told EVH how it felt being the greatest guitar player in the world? He said you mean Roy Clark?

Junior brown combined two guitars and called it, "guit-steel."
