What’re your thoughts on Returnal (PS5)

I’m thinking about picking it up tomorrow. Looks like a real sleeper hit. Didn’t know anything about this until about a week ago and now I am anticipating it, bigly. Anyone else looking to grab it?

Just came here to start a thread on this. I’m pumped, I’ve played nothing but RPGs for the past couple years and am excited to dive into a fast paced shooter for a change of pace and it will be the first real PS5 exclusive to take advantage of. Valhalla is the only game I’ve played since getting the 5

Sci fi horror with some HR giger looking scenery? Sign me up.
I think people will dismiss this because it borrows some roguelike/roguelight concepts. These same people will bitch about how gaming has no creativity and has become too reliant on franchises/formulas. I’m willing to reward an up and coming studio for trying to adapt an indie genre into a AAA title.

Gonna get it for free on PS+ in 2 years. I will NEVER pay $70 for a goddamn procedurally generated game

Gonna wait until the price drops like for Demon’s Souls. I was able to get that one for $45.

I think the story and concept look awesome, but the save system (or lack thereof) is a huge turn off for me. These days I really need games where you can save at any time, or have regular checkpoints, since I don't always have time for 3-hour gaming sessions.

Got the shite kicked out of me in the first biome for a while but I finally managed to knock off the first boss.
The combat is simple enough but some of the more aggressive enemy types can really tax you.
If you think the bullet hell projectiles are weak sauce in the first area, don’t worry. The second area has got you covered.

I’ve seen clips of it. The soundtrack, the atmosphere, storyline and gameplay seem right up my alley. You can tell there are some Lovecraft, Metroid, Prometheus, maybe some Arrival and Aliens inspiration. The music and sound is supposedly incredible.
Looks like the only complaints are the difficulty of the game and the lack of saves.

I played for about an hour yesterday, I’ve been busy so haven’t had time to really dive in. I died twice in that period and when you die you start back at the crash site but the map is different. So when does it save? Do you have to reach a certain “checkpoint” and then walk all the way back to said checkpoint after everytime you die? It’s kinda confusing

The game doesn’t save.
Whenever you die or quit, a cycle ends and another begins. Random loot and level layout each time.
You can keep certain abilities and beating bosses open up shortcuts, but that’s about it.
Wouldn’t be shocked if they patch in mid run saving at some point though. Highly requested feature.

Hate Souls-like/Roguelike games that make you grind and do shite repeatedly to progress. This seems like one of those so I will pass.

There are various biomes. I think you have to reach a new biome before it truly saves. But even then it doesn’t save your weapons or anything unless you’re able to get permanent upgrades, which there are some.
If you speed through it I’ve heard you can get through a biome in a couple of hours. But I’ve also heard the slower you play it and the more you grind, spending 3-4 hours in each biome to pillage everything, that it makes the game a lot easier. One guy I watched spent 4 hours in one just trying to upgrade everything and he ended up shredding the next biome too because of the time he spent grinding

I've been playing this for a few days now and it is kicking my arse. Haven't made it out of the first "world" yet. I don't know if I'm missing something or not utilizing everything appropriately but I tend to get destroyed in the rooms that throw 3 waves of enemies at me. I finally accessed the Reconstructor which has helped me advance a little further than previous runs but damn this shite is difficult. Guessing I simply need to git gud
