A/C guy put 4 lbs of refrigerant in my home unit and said the reason is a leak in the coils. Cost to replace was quoted at $3,200.

Is that standard? Seems high to me.

I had to have my coil replaced on my upstairs unit back in December. I believe it was $1900 luckily my refrigerant is 410A. The unit is a Bryant 2.5 ton unit.

Have to replace a 4.0 ton, and quote is about $3,200 as well. Not sure about the size of your system.

How old is the unit? R-22 or R-410A refrigerant? Does seem high though.

The coils?

Like both inside and out?

How old is the unit?

At 15 years old, I’m sure that’s an R-22 system, expensive refrigerant since it is no longer made in the USA and can’t be imported, but still available at $$$, and given the avg expected life of 13-15 years for a HVAC in the Deep South, you’d likely better off investing in a replacement system if you can swing it - even if you could have the repair done for $2K.

4 lbs of refrigerant indicates a pretty significant leak, but if you are lucky, and there is no way for you to know this, if it could get through the summer and fall without an additional recharge, giving you time to do your homework and get multiple quotes, that would be the best case scenario for you.

There is the option of replacing the coil, I’m assuming evaporator coil is where the leak is, and converting the system to a cheaper, but nearly equivalent, replacement refrigerant like R407C - maybe it can buy you 3 or 4 more years. At this point, it a roll of the dice for you.

I agree.

R-22 is outdated, and needs to be replaced with a new unit.

My house was built around 2009. About 4 years ago we started having several issues. We had a company come out several times, and they kept saying we had a refrigerant leak.

I have a trusted friend who then came by and inspected everything. He discovered our indoor system required R-410a and the outside AC unit required R-22. He said this was not good and we were lucky it lasted as long as it did. I was fortunate that he replaced our entire unit.

I would put up the money and get a new unit, especially if your unit requires R-22.

Mine has had a small leak for over 13 years in the attic. Every two years or so, they fill it back up with R22 one to two pounds. I have spent somewhere between $1,000 and $1,200 over that time. The original quote was $2,500 to fix.

So for that time I have saved myself from buying a new AC and had I bought one it would been 13 years old and probably would`ve had an issue or two already.

Just didn`t have the money back in the day to get a new one. Now that life has settled down and I can do those types of things, I find it hard to replace as it still works great.

That is definitely too high. Just paid $2100 for new coil for 5 ton downstairs AC included coil, new pan, freon and new expansion valve. This was in March. Has full 3 year warranty on coil and labor if I have a problem.

Did our 2 1/2 ton upstairs AC last summer and it was around $1600 if I remember correctly.

I'd just like to add what a flippin racket this is. I'm going to have both my 'inside' coils replaced in the fall under warranty. They are 7 years old right now and have been a problem since year 3.

We replaced ours today - replaced coils 4 ton, overflow pan (rusted), plenum (rusted), and some drain pipe replacement.
$2750.

He is pretty good and always cheaper than other people we have used. In Houston too

Nu-air, used him before. Wasn't cheap though. He does know what he's doing and is fast.

BTW, I looked them up on facebook and called. Talked with him directly and set up an appointment time the next day to come over.

No show, no call, no response to texts.

I have a lot of patience with trades because there's just so many things that can mess up a day or days. But frick no response after having spoken with you for 10 minutes.

YMMV

ETA: Called Pabst after that and they never returned two messages left with them.

Got Three Rivers out and they did a stand-up job.

Sorry to hear that. Ive only met with him twice and don't know him personally. I probably won't use him again after reading this though. I'm always on the lookout for new AC guys even before mine breaks.

Here is the guy I use. Bethancourt AC

I can vouch for him because he's worked on my unit for years. He lives around the corner from me, and his wife works with my wife (no pics of either). Ask for Jonathan.
