Black Bear Hunting in Louisiana?

I have luckily and gratefully hunted black bears in Alaska and Utah in my lifetime. I also still have one of my late father’s Louisiana black bear permits from the early 1970s.

Anyone have an idea, if and when, the LA Department of W&F will reopen black bear hunting in Louisiana?

Very limited, lottery-style drawings for tags and permits like many Western states? Residents only or open to nonresidents also? Prohibitively expensive so only the ultra-wealthy can participate?

The state continues to move the bar. They do say that the three areas in Louisiana that contain bears need to interbreed. The two that actually contain Louisiana Black Bears are interbreeding. The group down along the coast was imported from up north. Really no reason for them to mingle with the other bears since they aren’t Louisiana Black Bears. In the Tensas area, we’re slap overrun with them.

Soon I hope. Not that I have a big desire to kill them. But there are too many damn bears around here

We keep hearing rumors of a season but only limited to landowner permits.
If they do have a season, I’m sure it will be very limited . They need to have a season on the TRNWR as well as some of the management areas infested with bear.

I've got a camp in Tensas.... I can remember when we used to think seeing a bear was pretty cool. No longer. They are absolutely a nuisance.

I do know that LDWF is trying to study what to do with them. This past season they set up a DNA tagging station on our place. Hopefully they will do some kind of season on them before too long.

LDWF and USFW have a lot more work to do to fend off the lawsuits from greenies if they try to open it back up, even on a very limited lottery basis.

Ahhhhh, the Louisiana Black Bear, a wonderful opportunity for them to blindly and ignorantly manage another species of wildlife....just like the alligator.

There was one come up in a neighbors yard a year or two ago in CenLa. Im not an expert on bears but it was a black bear, so I guess it was a "La Black Bear"? Maybe it was some other kind. Them things are cute critters, but I wouldn't want to come across any bear walking in the woods. I thought I had been hearing the last few years that La was going to be doing a "Lottery Season" sometime soon.

Too much politics and money involved. I don’t think it will happen any time soon. I too have a tensas camp and it’s very rare I go a weekend without seeing them.

Too much money from all the conservation tools. Will never happen.

I hunt in area 6 and we have had several small pigs and young does killed and promptly eaten by the bears. Ridiculous.

Many conservation folks want a limited / lottery season. the number of road kills and nuisance bear incidents clearly points to over population on sustainable habitat. the fight against a season will come from "protectionist" groups.

due to them being listed on the ESA and the nuances of the populations a huge sticking point is proving that there is co-mingling and inter breeding between the 3 populations hence the "habitat corridor" that connects all 3.

them killing the pigs is a good thing, I am surprised they can catch a doe.
