I need to cut out a 12” X12” square in n my patio. It’s a basic patio of 4” thick concrete. I want to try and do it as neat as possible because I will be filling it back in when I’m finished. I looked on AAA rentall website and they have a few smaller jackhammer’s. Would this one be the best way to do it or is there a better way? TIA AAA Rentall Jackhammer

Explosives definitely explosives

On a more serious note that small chipper probably won’t get the job done. Before you decide if you want to tackle that job I would want to know if it had wire in it or fibers. Wire I would probably pay someone else to do it. If fibers you can cut or drill to weaken then beat the shite out of it to break it with a sledgehammer. It will be tough work not impossible.

Get a diamond blade for your circular saw along with diamond blades for a multitool and go to town. Cut your lines with the circular saw and finish the corners with the multitool. Smack with sledgehammer to finish breaking it off and facilitate removal. It will take longer and may cost a little more but it will be very neat. Wear a good respirator too.

Diamond blade on an angle grinder and a rotary hammer would do the trick on a job that small.

Try and jackhammer into pieces as large as you can handle. You don't want to have to sift gravel size pieces up.

What are you filling it back in with? If you're pouring a fresh slab, could you just skim coat the existing slab to the new one to create a uniform look?

This

This. Drilling holes with a Hammer drill will assist you in breaking up the concrete in that small defines area while the Grinder blade will give you good straight edges for a clean finish.

Then you need to at least score it and then use the large
chipping hammer to break it out. Hope it is just poured concrete and not exposed aggregate.

For about $130 a day you can rent a demo saw with a diamond blade. I would do that and cut your lines first. Then it’s up to you how to get it out. Keep in mind if it has metal in it it will be harder to remove so you may want to cut it multiple times. If it was me I would cut it multiple times and then use a mini x to peal it out. I’ve never done this with concrete though. I just did something very similar with a 10x40 section of asphalt though. The blade I used was a diamond blade rated for concrete and it cut the asphalt pretty easy. You need a saw that can go 4 inches deep.

As long as the mesh wasn't pushed to the bottom, the saw should take care of it. Flat bar + crow bar should free it up. I'd keep a grinder, metal snips, or reciprocating saw with metal blade nearby for mesh stragglers. If you cut it into 2x2 chunks, you should be able to get away without a jackhammer, just a hand full of sledgehammer strikes at the corners.

I did the same job (on a smaller scale) a few years ago. I rented a walk-behind concrete saw. Not only is it a lot easier to control than a handheld, it is about 50% cheaper since the blade was included......Home Depot makes you rent the blade for a handheld concrete saw separately. Cut your border, then make crisscross cuts in the interior making chunks small enough to for you to handle.

Be patient, wear a mask and glasses, and have couple good size chisels. Read up on how to break stone and use the hammer that way, after making a few cuts. You can rent a rotary hammer.

They said its only 12" x 12". Won't be hard to do or take too long

Oh I thought that was a typo, meaning 12` by 12`. Why would someone need to come to a discussion board to get rid of a paving stone? I didn't actually read his post. I'm an idiot.
