Love the sound, interested in acquiring one maybe. Any leads? Anyone ever play one or own one?

Here’s a sample Sweet Dreams cover by Patty Gurdy

Thanks

I like the scene in polar express where the hobo is playing a hurdy gurdy on the top of the train

I don’t know, but Donovan’s Hurdy Gurdy Man makes me feel like I smoked a whole pot.

It can be a very creepy and unsettling sounding instrument.

It seems to me, like it's machine that is designed to mimic a fiddle of some sort. Whatever comes out of it, depends on whoever is playing it.

Honestly, your thread has got me kind of interested too. Seems to me, that it may be a fairly easy instrument to learn, and has a great sound. 1200 bucks doesn't seem all that bad for such a complicated instrument.

Outside of hearing the song by Donavan, I didn't know what this was. Thanks for sending me down that rabbit hole.

I've always had a knack to be able to pick up different instruments and and play them. Like the other poster said, for $1200 I'm interested in getting one now for their uniqueness.

24 keys, that are just basically fretting strings mechanically against a rosined wheel and has a sound like that. If you can change directions in that wheel kind of fast, you can probably get some fantastic sounds. If you messed around with some different tunings on it, who knows what you might get out of it...
Really a genius instrument when you think about it. Like putting a rubber wheel on a die grinder, and playin your guitar with it
...and what if you built one with a resonator behind it? or maybe a slide hurdy gurdy…
What if you had a quiet electric motor on your hurdy gurdy wheel, with a foot pedal speed control? and distortion and delay...

Always considered a HG to be much like a banjo. Where most anyone can pick it up (esp being open tuned) and come up with a passable tune. Yet in the wrong hands you might avoid them like the plague.

However when done right . . . although never had the good fortune to handle one.
