Thoughts on Refurb Desktops?

My inlaws need a new computer and of course it HAS to he a desktop. They don't want to spend a lot. They use it for nothing more than occasional web surfing and paying bills. Thinking about going to refurb route considering the real lack of a need for buying anything expensive and high performance.
Anyone gone this route? Experiences?

I have purchased refurb items with no problems.A refurb item is generally "repaired" by the manufacturer, and by repaired they usually replace the part with a new part, and sold as a refurbished item, and usually have the full manufacturers warranty. For the situation you are describing, seems like the perfect alternative to new.
ETA: I purchased a refurbed iMac 27" from the Apple Store, online, three years ago for my work computer, see's extended use 5 days a week. Not one issue at all.

A cheap desktop with an SSD is probably all they need. I assume it's just going to be used for old people facebooking

I bought a refurbished HP mini desktop from Tigerdirect last year and have been pleased. It arrived clean and in good working condition and included a 1 year warranty and a valid Windows license.
A 4th generation or newer Intel i5 quad core CPU, 8 GB RAM and a 256 GB SSD should be adequate resources for a general purpose desktop.

Just echoing the other responses, don't be worried about buying refurbed. They basically just get a better QC check than "new" items.

I have. Never have had an issue either.
As long as the party doing the refurbishing is reputable and the product has a warranty of some sort, I dont see the issue.
Depends where you buy from, but most of the time the original manufacturer does the refurb. To me, that's preferable but not mandatory. Be sure to also look at pictures of the actual product before buying.

My track record with refurb desktops failing is surprisingly about the same as with new desktops I've bought over the years. I always shop for refurbs first when it comes to desktops because you just get more for the money without much downside.
This is especially true if you're looking for business class computers. They are often formerly leased models that were returned as planned rather than because of a failure.

Even that machine would be pretty overkill, but it's incredibly small and can be stashed away
Something like this is perfect. That one is overkill. You can get one for like $130 to do anything. I'm about to buy one simply to run some scripts on and serve as a pihole.

Only refurbished items I stay away from are wearables- headphones, watch, etc.
Refurb desktop is a no brainer if it’s a good deal.

Another option that might work for them is a Chromebox. Much less maintenace, updates itself and appears to be secure.
