Pavement

I think they are the quintessential 90's indie rock band... And I think the 90's was the era of indie rock (specifically that term, not independent music)...

So, it makes sense to me!

They don't just define it, they invented it.

I was going to question that, but simply don't know enough about it. King Crimson has to be the band name most uttered and written yet no one knows a single thing they did.

No one? Speak for yourself.

Dinosaur Jr. is almost never given the credit they deserve for being a jumping off point for grunge, or at least the more tuneful version of grunge that eventually went mainstream.

Yeah, I don't agree with this. If it were not for Beavis and Butthead, almost no one would even know they existed, and they have like one great song.

Allman Bros are probably my favorite band but if I’m being honest Lynyrd Skynyrd is the band that defined Southern Rock.

Southern Rock?

None define it better than Molly Hatchet. IMO

Wow...with all the hate for this genre on this board, I’m surprised it took 3 pages for:

Best Band That Transcended Genres

Beatles

edit to add " and most influential"

Were it not for The Beatles, a lot of the musicians in those other bands may never have picked up an instrument. Read their bios and you'll probably see something like that.

And I agree with those that said Allman Brothers were way beyond southern rock. Their music included blues, rock, jazz, and country, at the least.
