Looking to put in outdoor security cameras at the house. I'd like something that I can check remotely, from my phone. I'd rather something that records locally, instead of paying for cloud services.

Budget is around $400-$500. What should I be looking at?

Search Tigerdroppings. There is a thread about this every few days.

I think arlo has like 7 days of free cloud storage and battery powered cameras for easy installation. You can search cameras like amcrest on amazon for stand alone options that can store on a network drive or micro sd card and be accessed remotely.

If you have a pc that stays on I would grab blue Iris and some IP cameras. Blue Iris is the shite

I’ve been having issues with my Arlo cameras. They keep disconnecting from the base station. Other than that they have been great.

Arlo Pro 2. Super easy to install and check remotely.

I recently installed a Swann camera system at my house. So far I am very pleased with it. The app has terrible reviews but I (knock on wood) haven't had any issues accessing and viewing live and recorded footage.

Just installed a Reolink camera system in my home. Very easy to install with POE & in your price range for 4 cameras w/ app and local recording. Good picture but have only had for a few weeks so I cannot give you long term results.

REOLINK is decent for the price. Can you comment how loud the fan is for the actual DVR?

I have the DVR and computer screen set up on top of some cabinets in my laundry so I don't hang around enough to notice the noise. Additionally there is usually a washer or dryer running and I don't hear anything over that..

With that being said you made me go listen in complete silence - IMO its no louder than a regular computer hard drive running.

trying to decide between Arlo Pro 2 or Blink XT for outside camera setup.

Since AP2 costs $$$, is it more reliable as far as picture quality, notifications, cloud storage etc, than Blink XT?

Arlo user here as well. It has a mobile app that you can check on your phone, has two way audio as well. I think they're dropping good deals here now that it's the black friday. But you might not like its monthly storage fee. The only problem I have with arlo is the battery. We went from charging every 5months to every 4weeks. We ended up replacing the batteries.
