13 year old nephew in florida. Never had a pocket knife ever, I'm amazed.

SIL finally said he could have one, I was thinking an old timer and soemthing kind of cheap since he'll probably lose it.

She said I had to lay off the white cans though, I said at 16 he can have one.

Get him a case trapper. Yellow handle. Get his name written on it. $50 investment. When he loses it he’ll feel guilty and hopefully teach him to take care of his shite. $50 well spent.

Meh. I don't have nostalgia about knives at all. It is a Renaissance - never been a better time to shop for a pocket knife.

I'm digging the Ontario Rat 2 lately. Great, cheap knife - you can get AUS-8 for like $25 or so, or kick in another $5 to $8 and get D2. Knifeworks will do an engraving for $9. You can get orange scales (I did) or a range of other colors.

Ka-Bar Dozier would be a similar choice. The Buck Vantage flipper (their entry level) is a fantastic value, too and a little more traditional looking.

Columbia river makes some great knives that won’t break the bank but are still quality enough that he knows you didn’t go to the bargain bin.

Does he fish or hunt or anything much?

As a kid, a swiss army was always sweet with all the BS you played with and never used. The actual knives are junk though.

I have an EDC now, but as a 13 year old thats not really a good idea due to school and what not. I was just thinking something with a gut hook or whatever in addition to the knife that he can wear on a belt may be better than a standard folding knife. Something he can wear around the yard and neighborhood and camping on a belt.

ETA: As an adult better steel is better, and less likely to cut yourself. For a kid though, I don't think you really want something super sharp. Better to slice their finger open often than cut it off once lol.

I agree that for a kid a swiss army knife is the real deal. When I was a kid I had one with a spoon and fork and toothpick and even some tweezers. Completely useless, but awesome.

No, probably just wants it because a knife is cool, like most kids.

This is why I was thinking a classic old timer, swiss army knife or a couple of the other suggestions.
