Democrats’ chances of flipping a Republican seat in South Carolina’s historically red 5th District took a major hit after court documents emerged Monday saying candidate Archie Parnell abused his ex-wife in the 1970's.
The stunning revelation has swiftly led to calls from his own party for the Democratic congressional candidate to withdraw from the race.
“This is truly a sad situation," DNC Associate Chairman Jaime Harrison said on Twitter, urging Parnell to withdraw. “The publicity today must be devastating for his former wife & his current family.”
quote:
They say that on an October morning in 1973, Parnell's wife Kathleen was with friends at an apartment when Parnell, then a college student, “force(d) his way into the said apartment by breaking out the glass door with a tire iron, after being locked out for the protection of the plaintiff.”
The records go on to describe Parnell entering the apartment and repeatedly striking his wife, causing an “acute physical injury.”
quote:
Later that night, Kathleen was allegedly beaten again.
She later filed a restraining order against her husband until their divorce was finalized in 1974.
quote:
Even Parnell's former campaign staffers have turned on him since the documents' release.
“He should drop out immediately,” said John Kraljevich, Parnell’s social media director until March, when he resigned to run for the state House.
Parnell’s campaign manager, Yates Barody, said she saw the documents Thursday and formally resigned after finding out about the candidate’s past.

Dragging up something from 1973? This precedent is going to paralyze our elections

Dims would vote for a wife beater before they would vote for a republican.

How is somebody like this even a candidate in the first place?
Their vetting process must be for shite.

who gives a shite? Seriously, I'm tired of this constant "look at what this guy allegedly did 15-100 years ago"
it's tiresome, from both sides.

Why are Democrats always so violent?
Were they born this way?

Exactly. The moral Puritanism is getting old.

Wonder how Dems are going to continue to push against mandatory long sentences for criminals and continue to support the failed notion of rehabilitation for law beakers when it's being proven time and time again that when these people do things like this even if it's 45 years ago and they have not repeated their offense they still can not can not be trusted ever again and must be continually punished for the rest of their lives.

Roy Moore agrees with you.

It's easier to love them. Especially if you're 32 and she's 17.

I'm always glad to see Democrats burn themselves, but it seems a bit ridiculous to drudge up stuff like this from 40 years ago if it isn't rape or murder or something bad that the person never paid the price for.

Wow got a warning and post deleted for what was clearly a joke. I apologize to the snow flake who took it seriously and reported me.
But I stand by my view that this is ridiculous. Women are simply being allowed to destroy men's careers by making allegations from 20 plus years ago.

That's the position that any man should have on all this ... regardless of D or R.

I didnt RA you, and while I disagree, I dont recall you saying anything that was that out of bounds or inappropriate given the conversation.
Anyway, this was backed by court documents and not a tearful press conference with vague details. In this instance, guy should probably step out of the race.
And I think forgotten in the whole Roy Moore saga was, after the allegations came out, he gave that interview to hannity (i think) where he just flat out bombed it. his inability to articulate a convincing defense only gave more validity to the claims in the court of public opinion.
