What kind of UPS would you recommend for a gateway/modem for my BGW 210 Fiber equipment and ONT (I think it is called all I know is it is a white little box on the wall that is plugged in too)

Is it even worth doing this?

Mainly want it so we still have hardware line for at least mobile devices when the power goes out. At least for 2 hours + even 2 hours exactly is fine. The more the better though but not really required.

Sounds like it wouldnt be worth it. Your phone as a hotspot would work well.

Any desktop model would work, but you need to check their runtimes on battery. UPS is meant to give you protection and allow you to gracefully shutdown.

When I built my Unifi network a few years ago, I put one of these in my rack:

CyberPower OR700LCDRM1U

I bought the 700VA for $199 in 2019 and it's selling for 50% more now.. damn inflation. At the time when I did research, this model was mentioned alot. I use it to keep power to my ATT gateway, ONT, router, POE switch, APs and couple cameras.

Though it hardly ever kicks in as I'm not too far from a substation. We've only had couple big power outages in a few years. When we have lost power at the house, this kept the internet up for us. Though I assume this is dependent on the outside ATT pedestal still having power too.

Though I do like that it can protect against a brownout or blackout and allow a graceful shutdown. The Unifi gen 1 cloudkey I have is notorious for its storage to get corrupted if you don't do a graceful shutdown.

I have one of these: LINK

Not that I suggest it over any other, as it's the only one I've ever had, but I will say that it kept my BGW320 going for the length of the Ida power outage. A couple of times a day, I would plug in the UPS, charge up cell phones, use wifi for a bit on my laptop, then unplug it again.

I bought it to make sure I didn't lose power to my desktop in a way that damaged it, but it was a nice little fringe benefit. Never lost fiber internet the entire time.

It's worth it. The Modem and ONT pull almost no wattage at all. I recycled a Cyberpower 500VA? unit to stick on each device (my modem was upstairs, the ONT was in the garage.) The ONT measured at over a week of expected uptime, and the modem four or five days, but that was also with a 24 port switch and a 5 port PPoE switch plugged into it. Oh, and a NAS.

You are an absolute fool if you rely on tethering off of your phone during a power outage.

1) 5G/LTE have shorter range than 3G, so if the power is out in your hood, and you're not near an interstate, then the LTE tower a mile from your house is probably down too. This was certainly the case during the Houston deep freeze. People couldn't send text messages until I told them to disable LTE. Then, that was almost all they could do, except refresh centerpointenergy.com and wait for it to refresh the page for 30 seconds.

2) Many major carriers distinguish between mobile data use and hotspot use, and charge overages much faster on hotspot use.

3) What do you think your neighbors are going to try doing? Tethering.

Buy the cheapest Cyberpower UPS for the ONT/Modem, and get another one for your Wifi router (if you have one.)

Unless you have a home generator, it's not worth it.

We're talking about $80 tops, and you replace a $30 battery every three years. Not worth it??

Go sit in the McDonalds parking lot taking conference calls next time, but see if your kids put up with that. You are a complete moron.

To power your modem/router for 30 minutes when you could just hotspot your phone

Yet you call me the moron

While I personally think Blue is wrong, not sure we need to be insulting one another over something so trivial

I have one of these on my ATT fiber BGW320 ONT/Router. Power went out for 1hr 19 minutes the other night and I switched the movie I was watching on my TV over to my laptop to finish it up.

It's small and light and does the job.
