Portland, Maine in early spring

I've got a week of vacation the first week of May, and we are thinking about going to Portland. I've ready most of the old topics on the city, but had a few more questions.
How will the weather be in early May? And the flies?
What hotels do ya'll recommend? Portland Harbor Hotel looks promising, but wanted to see if any others are recommended.
Is renting a car a necessity? What we like most on vacations is drinking/dining/relaxing and checking out the local historic sites. The missus is not an outdoorswoman.

I lived in Portland.
I would stay in the harbor area, and I would rent a car. You’ll want to drive out of town, and go up and down the coast.
Spring starts late in Maine, and Summer is shorter. The best weather is in August and that’s the busiest month by a mile.
I don’t have strong memories about early May but I did look up the weather from last year. Lows were in the 40s, highs in the 50s and 60s.

It’s still going to be pretty cold, but you won’t have to worry about flies.

Inn by the Sea is our favorite place to stay. It’s only 10 minutes from downtown Portland.

Not if you plan to stay in Portland, but you’ll be Ubering around a good bit.

Did you mean early summer OP? May is not early spring? Confused by your post?
I originally was going to say be prepared for potential snow and cold temps in early spring. May is still a little early for summer temps, but could be very nice

May should be fine. It might be a bit chilly and it's still mud season if you go out hiking but I wouldn't be dettered by that.
I've stayed at the Portland Harbor and the location is great.
There are tons of great restaurants in Portland that are within walking distance of the Old Port. Scales, Solo Italiano, and Eventide are my favorites. Bunch of breweries as well. It's a great little city.
In Portland itself, it's so small you won't need a car, but if you want to go up and down the coast, which I would, you'll want one. Kennebunkport, Falmouth, and Harpswell are all really nice. You can also take the ferry over to some of the islands like Chebeague and Peaks, which is fun.

Highly recommend. Cool nautical theme. Great location. Can practically walk or Uber anywhere (mostly walk). Central provisions (do the chef’s table) and Street & Co are right across the street and down a small cobblestone alley. Mash tun is also down that alley. Great locals bar with great beer selections
Even tide and duckfat are 2 restaurants worth mentioning as well. Decent walk but easily doable.

Honey Paw restaurant owned by the same chef as Eventide and right next door was our favorite meal.
Eastern Cemetery has people who fought in the Revolutionary War buried there. We stayed in an airbnb across the street and above a bookstore.
Novare Res Bier cafe has a cool beer garden but may be too cold for outside in March.
Brahm Hall is a cool bar in the basement of an old building off the beaten track.

I went the first weekend in May a couple of years back, and the weather was perfect. Highs were in the 60s and lows were in the 40s. I don’t recall any flies.
We stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn Downtown. Great location and very walkable to most of the bars and restaurants. The hotel bar had some nice brews on tap, too.
We did not rent a car. Walked and biked most places. Took an Uber to some breweries away from downtown.

Didn’t eat there but had some drinks there while waiting for our table next door. Menu looked great

Heading there this weekend …. Supposed to snow up to 8”.
Working in Boston, so really just a quick getaway.
Like seeing some recs on here … hoping for a few solid dinners and a good spot to catch the games on Sunday.

I hope you’re getting out of here before Friday afternoon. We’re about to get slammed with this storm.

Wet and muddy. Should be in the 50’s.
I’d suggest staying in the downtown, harbor, bayside area. I’d also suggest renting a car and getting to the other coastal towns.

Lots of bars and restaurants that are all walkable. I would rent a car though. I don't think there is enough to do there to kill a week.
I would take time and drive up and down the coast, lots of little towns to check out.
Scales was the one meal that stands out from my trip there, highly recommend.
