Does this surprise anyone else? I mean he did more with less at Mississippi State. His teams always played tough, he developed his qb’s. You would think with the resources, better recruiting advantages, and that side of the division he would have fared better. That being said I’m sure he won’t have a problem finding work.

He was always a lazy recruiter and an a-hole that rubs people the wrong way.

You can be one or the other but not both.

The way Florida went down the tubes may suggest internal player attitude problems.

Sometime coaches need to know their limits. Not everyone is meant to coach a NC level program.

He was overrated at MSU. He had a 10 win season and finished better than fourth in the West one time. UF reached when they hired him.

He was fine for State. Lower expectations, lower results but consistent.

I love Steve but I think he sticks his nose into the coaches business way too much. Needs to let it go.

Yes and no.

Yes for the reasons you mentioned, but it doesn’t surprise me that he couldn’t pull in the recruits given the way he throws his players under the bus in postgame press conferences.

He will learn his lesson, and be a good ball coach somewhere.

I’ll admit I’m pretty surprised. I expected him to bring Florida back for Meyer level.

That might be the best run down I have seen, because it’s true.

Thought he was a lil too cute…. Had to prove he was the smartest guy in the room. Most times looked like he out thought himself. Good riddance.

Quote “pure talent fatal flaw”

Guy can scheme with the best of em but is very awkward socially so recruits go elsewhere.

this.

And also this:

A guy like Dak (or Joe Burrow) can carry so much team leadership and attitude that they mask the deficiencies of a HC at times.

Yeah, I agree. I'm sure Saban can testify that your methods will not be accepted the same everywhere you go.

The way he crashed and burned suggests he was fired for off field problems. He's an A-1 jack arse and it came back to bite him. If he's a reflective person he'll learn from this and be a good coach for someone or he'll take Muschamps path and fizzle out. Never liked the guy so I don't care. Fug him.

Surprise me? frick no.

He is an a-hole who thinks he doesn't need to recruit to be good, just like McEwan was. Florida HS coaches don't like that shite and Essentially told him to get fricked lol.

Worries me a little though that UF is hiring a guy who is a recruiter more than anything else.

UF succeeds when they recruit the frick out of Florida.

I remember what a pain he was for LSU at Mississippi St. Took so much pleasure in taking us down whenever he could.

Ironic how he did against LSU at Florida with equivalent resources.

The completion in the SEC is brutal. Even a down and out LSU team can beat you on a good day. Going up against Smart and Saban in recruiting just adds insult to injury.

I agree. Going back to his State days, it seemed like he was too smart for his own good at times. He'd randomly go away from what was working.

Running the ball successfully? Let's throw it on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd down. QB looking good? Let's put the other QB in for the next drive.

To be fair, Mullen did make three-straight NY6 bowls at Florida. Objectively, he wasn't a disaster, so I assume his personality was rubbing important people wrong, and he lost the locker room. Even Muschamp got another year after a losing season.
