re: Anyone depressed?

Again, these are great suggestions for someone stuck in a rut or who has "the blues." My wife's sleep is broken throughout the night and she's always up with the sun, not because she wants to but because she can't sleep any longer. She forces herself to takes long walks, not because it helps her mood, but because exercise is necessary. It doesn't make her feel any better. This is someone who loves nature, art, music, beauty of all kinds and it's all been taken away from her. That's the reality of serious depression. You don't work your way out of it by doing things or making changes to your routine. For some people, medication and therapy helps. For others, it goes away on its own. And for some it's intractable and they just have to live with it.

My Dad started taking venlafaxine years ago and got him back to normal.

Have you tried a light box? Supposedly they help and they’re inexpensive.

My SAD really gets going hard after the start of the year. January is usually an awful month for me as far as mental health is concerned. Nothing serious, but man, I hate it. Typically by February we start having a random "warm" day that boosts my spirits. January here is typically 33 degrees and rain. It just beats you down.

Being sad is generally pretty temporary.
SAD=seasonal affective disorder
not the state of mood you’re in.

Yeah. I have depression on its own. But these seasons can be brutal.

I try to get outside every day that it is sunny for this very reason….even if it is cold.

So do I. I adjust better to the shorter winter days than the super long summer days.

agreed - been there recently as well. my dad has dementia, and while walking he fell, and hit his head and split above his eye open. I saw him fall, and froze and could not react to catch him. I helped him up, and gave him my ski cap to staunch the blood, and ran to get some 1st aid stuff from the car.
I have struggled since with the feeling of being a worthless son, and failing him in that instance in time. i realize it is likely in my head, but i cannot help feeling like I do. some of you may find that funny, or quip something sarcastic - and if you do, I would not harbor any ill feelings towards you - this is the OT after all.
but year, with his 78th birthday coming up in a week, it is a sobering thought that this is very likely his last year.

You cannot blame yourself. Unfortunately falls are extremely common for elderly folks, especially those with dementia.
Look at it as a blessing that you were there to immediately render first aid. You were not able to stop the fall but you quite possibly saved his life. Imagine if he would have been alone and laid there for who knows how long, bleeding and confused. You saved him!

I know - and I am grateful to have been there for that, and believe me i have had those thoughts as well - and I know he would never feel towards me how I feel about the situation, but yeah it is a tough pill to swallow.
it has been a rough last few years with him due to numerous medical issues, and then Covid keeping me from seeing him due to how bad it would have been for him to get it.
just trying to make the most of my time with him

I have been depressed since January of last year.

This was 9 or 10 years ago, but I struggled with depression and anxiety.
I went to the doctor and had a bunch of test ran. I had an extremely low vitamin D level.
My doctor explained to me that when your body doesn't get enough VD it pulls it from your bone marrow and that can cause all sorts of issues.
I was also having back pain that I couldn't seem to figure out what it was.. My doctor at the time completely missed ulcers I had on my gallbladder which eventually had me in tears one night and had to be rushed to the hospital to have it removed.
In summary, between that situation, taking VD and making myself get out more (I was at a point where I would avoid going places, just felt down and out) and I eventually got it under control, but it wasn't fun to deal with.
I think mine was more of a result of my phyical state at the time (the problems with low VD and gallbladder situation), but it sucked.
