Posting this now, it's about to dropped within the hour. I will go into this with an open mind. It being a series rather than a movie adaptation like Death Note gives me a little more hope, I'm praying that this ends up being good

Bounty hunters in space. Based on an anime show.

Think an anime version of Firefly except the backdrop is Blade Runner.

It’s gotten trashed by reviews thus far claiming it’s trying to hard to be like the anime and failing.

Wait...is this new? i thought it was just the old show from the 90s that was available on there now.

Yes to both. Netflix has been pushing the original anime for a few weeks but today they released a live action version they made based on the original.

so do people trust the critics or do they not trust the critics?

Considering anime live adaptations almost always fail hard, it’s possible the critics may be right here.
But they’re were also comparing it to the anime so maybe non-anime watchers might like it

I'm going to watch at least the first few and share my thoughts on it. Let others then decide if they want to watch it or not.

Alita was pretty good even though the critics are stupid.

I try to look for the critic's bias. Read a review of a Spanish reality show on Decider last night where the reviewer said "skip it" and his only complaints were that there was only one same sex couple on the show and that the cast was "too White" and decided that it's probably worth checking out.

First episode was okay. The beginning with Spike kicking the coin was cringy but it's been awhile since I've watched the anime so I don't remember if that happened or not. No Ed yet.

Watching the intro, I didn't think I'd make it as far as I am now(episode 3)
It gets a little better. I like the actor playing Jet, still not sure about Spike, and pretty sure they got the wrong person to play Faye.

Anime fans: this is shite. It’s nothing like the anime.
Also Anime fans: this is shite. They tried to make it too much like the anime

3 Episodes in and it's just ok. I like the style, music, action, characters, the bad guys seem interesting and formidable, but it's missing humor. I don't know if it's a cast chemistry issue or what because it tries to be funny in parts, they just don't land it. And without the humor it's just ok.
I have not seen the original anime, so I'm just judging the show based on what it is.
UPDATE: The missing humor shows up in Episode 4 when Faye joins the team full time. That pushes it from ok to good.

I am not an anime guy and know next to nothing other than some of my nerd friends loved Cowboy Beebop in college. I worked in IT but my coworkers and friends were video game/anime needs. Not hating.
but the wife is out of town and I have beer and bourbon.
It’s wild but fun an episode in.
