What if you called 911 and got a recording? It happened 839 times in a 2-week period

“That moment for me was like forever,” Velez said. “And I'm thinking, how is this happening? Who else do you call? Like, there's not another 9-1-1.”

WWL-TV first exposed the call center's use of a recorded message in early October when a when a citizen called 9-1-1 to try and report a vehicle burglary in progress. David Symons said he finally gave up in frustration after waiting more than 40 seconds.

“I would not want someone in a life-or-death situation to have to wait on hold,” he said.

When asked about the wait time the day after the story aired, City Communications Director Beau Tidwell downplayed the missed call as an “isolated incident.”

quote:

While it appears others reported the same accident and there was little delay getting an ambulance, one concerned caller fired off an email to Mayor LaToya Cantrell.

“I had to call 911 FIVE TIMES because I kept getting a recording,” the citizen wrote. “It's as though the city of New Orleans doesn't care about the City of New Orleans.”

Years ago my neighbors house caught on fire. Her and my neighbors called 911 for 17 minutes and got no answer. Multiple people on different phones. When the fire dept got here, they messed up the connection to the hydrant. They had to run a line from the other street nearby and it took almost 45 minutes to get water on the house. House was completely destroyed.

The city's response,

And people call me crazy when I want things like security and fire protection done privately, not through the government. You want cheaper, better and faster? The only way you can ever get all 3 is to switch from the government and go private.

Not sure if it was mentioned, but St Bernard Parish is going through the same thing.

Kind of heard some water cooler talk as to why this is, but obviously no idea how based in fact.

NOPD has actually improved their response time, but they still regularly have calls holding for hours and hours and hours. My buddy told me of several times where they went home with a call holding and came back for shift the next day with the same call still holding.

Every community is going through this. The 911 operators make a little over minimum wage, work 12 hour shifts and every other weekend. It’s a tough job physically and mentally for almost pocket change. And you’re legally responsible in many instances

This should be eye opening if people want to hear it.

One day, there won’t be 9-1-1.

I thought about the scene in Gangs of New York when the firefighter gangs feud while the house burns.

I called the police 2 nights ago directly and someone immediately answered. My city has 600k people and sent an officer to patrol the neighborhood. maybe try calling directly.

Well let's see...

If it was medical, I would throw whoever it was in a car and drive like a bat out of hell to the hospital.

If it was fire I guess I would just watch my shite burn after getting everyone out.

And if it was police related, I would make sure all threats were neutralized before I even attempted the call in the first place.

I've only called 911 twice in my life and both times I was put on hold and both times the BRPD basically just made me feel bad for calling. Both times were legit uses of the system where I witnessed serious crimes, and I could have led them to the POS criminals and both times the BRPD failed to respond. I actually got a busy signal three times in a row on one of those instances and then it rang for a long time, and was put on hold for like 5-10 minutes. The other time I was just put on hold and then transferred several times. It was odd.

Back when my wife was my gf, somebody was trying to break into her house in the middle of the night and it took BRPD 1.5 hours to show up. Fortunately, they broke in the back door and didn't go beyond the laundry room.

Don't expect it to be like the movies where you call 911 and they help. Call, but be prepared to fend for yourself.
