My 6 year old son wants a Nintendo Switch. I started researching and realized it’s basically the same console that came out in 2017. Should I just go ahead and spend $350 on a 5 year old system? I hate to do that then they release a new one next year.

Other option would be a X Box S.

Any suggestions?

Get the Switch but hold on to see if there is a special for Black Friday with games.

He wants the Switch..so you know what you have to do.

That being said the Xbox with Gamepass is fantastic value. The time frame of the release of a new Switch is really uncertain. The just did a slight upgrade to the current model. In any case the current model should have support with new games for several more years and he will have a good back catalog to keep him busy for a while.

I mean if you want to get him the latest and greatest technology, for a 6 year old, get the Xbox.

If it's about games, both have solid catalogs that just cater to different needs.

If you're worried about the life of the Switch. It will be supported for at least 4 more years minimum, even if they release another console.

Joy Con Repair

You know you can go here to send them in and get the drift fixed.

Also OP. I had a PS5. Sold it to by my kids 6 and 3.5 a switch. I have LOVED curb stomping their little asses in Mario Cart. Truly a right of passage

With the supply chains, I would not recommend this.

Honestly consoles these days should have the life cycles for about 10 years. The older of us remember how big of a step up it was between the Atari to the NES to the SNES to the N64 to the PS2 and then the XBox 360. Since then almost no real improvement in graphics and only improved storage. Keep in mind this game was made 20 years ago and it’s still beautiful and stands up to modern graphics:

I’m not ashamed to say the chainsaw zombies would probably fray my nerves on VR.

I'm sorry but that simply is not true.

I love Metroid Prime and while still looks good that's mainly b/c it has great art design. The actual graphics for the time are great but don't hold a candle to what they can do even on Switch. PS5 graphics completely blow those GCN graphics out of the water.

Games like Horizon Forbidden West, Ride 4, and Rachet and Clank: Rift Apart look absolutely incredible.

Like here is Tommy Vercetti from Grand Theft Auto Vice City on PS2 and PS5. You really want to say there's no real improvement?

I’m saying we went from this:

To this:

In 20 years. If Metroid Prime as is was released today, no one would bat an eye and say it still looks great. If you released Pitfall in 2002 everyone would go “What the frick is this shite?” I’m sorry, your example is not remotely compatible to that difference:

I take it you've never used an xbox controller for more than six months.
