I was playing a best ball yesterday and the other group drove a ball on the edge of the rough in the short grass on the next tee box. They moved the ball back stating you get a clubs length relief. Is that scenario really legal? It was obstructed by the rough not concrete or a cart path.

I’m not sure I quite understand what happened, but the only relief you’d get in that scenario is a putting green.

So they hit a bad slice on to the next tee box and it was nudged up against the rough on the short grass. They moved it back on to a perfect lie claiming you get relief. All three of my group said it was no question that’s the rule and I found that extremely hard to believe unless it’s some best ball rule I’m unaware of. Sounds like I was right to question it with how you answered.

That’s not relief under any scenario or format. What the hell were they claiming?

They said verbatim “you get a clubs length after every tee shot” I was so confused by it and then my own partner agreed with them so I let it go. I got clowned multiple times by my friend. Was walking behind me after I addressed the ball to get a read. They were both talking shite while I was taking putting strokes. I was extremely pissed off but it was the guys birthday so I never called them on their BS.

Y’all were playing best ball? Sounds like a scramble. In best ball, everyone plays their own ball and the lowest score on the hole counts for the team score.

It was a friends birthday so he made a rule where we could take the best drive of the two and then play out the hole by yourself. So I guess in this scenario the rules don’t apply because that’s not really a format.

I believe people tend to play scrambles that you can take a club length from where the ball was for the team to hit their balls from... ive never played like that, but have seen scrambles on YouTube and stuff that play like that

you get a clubs length
This is typical in a scramble format, mainly so every player doesn't have to play from the same divot. The rule is you have to keep the same lie though. If it's in the rough, you can't get a club length into the fairway, but you can place it rather than drop it in the rough.

You were playing a scramble not best ball. Anytime you play a scramble unless it’s for money you can throw most the rules out the window. And even if it’s for money you still can most the time

We play scrambles because they’re a lot more enjoyable for drinking and having fun. Much more laid back in my experience. Don’t take it personal.

If you don’t even know the difference between playing best ball and a shamble, or even that a shamble was a thing, and if your opponents are so bad that their best option was a ball that was on the tee box of a different hole, then you definitely need not ever get mad on a golf course again.

This best ball or captain's choice?

Seeing how you all were over at the ball figuring out placement on that sliced tee shot, makes me think captain's choice..

So in this format, aren't the other golfers allowed to place their balls within a certain distance of the original ball?

So if a ball was nudged against the rough, the other golfers could just play their balls a foot away from that original ball??

I am so confused reading all of these...Was it a Best Ball, Scramble, Shamble.

In most Scramble/Shamble tournaments you can bump your ball a scorecard lenght or club length according to the tournament rules...Best Ball should be play it down

I was curious on a ruling calm down. If you're playing shambles all the time I'm guessing you're a complete hack so no offense taken

Seems like you guys were just playing your own sort of game. If they made the rule a club length drop for everyone on every hole IMO I don’t see a problem.

It’s not an official rule but if you played it the whole day then it seems fair to me

In a scramble, you really want people to be liberal in placement of ball. 4 divots within 6 inches of each other is not good for the turf.

Our club host a scramble probably 35 Mondays a year. When I go out afterwards you can tell where the 4 divots are close together.

A club length is good enough to space our the divots a bit.

Scrambles are fun. You get to shoot a silly low score sometimes depending on the gimmicks. Red tee, mulligans, string, etc.
