Update: ended up not taking the trip as planned for various reasons but have decided to go the first week of October, because of that our plan is to do Boston + Maine Coast, or just the Maine Coast. Planning on going for 8 nights. Thoughts? If we did Boston+Maine, we’d fly into Boston for and stay 3 nights and then make the drive up the Coast, possibly stay in Portland for a night, Camden for 2 and Bar Harbor for 2 and then fly out of Portland. Just typing that out makes it seemed pretty rushed and makes me just want to stay in Maine for the entire trip. Any thoughts?

Recently made a post on a Costa Rica for next summer, but we've decided to nix the trip because of concerns reentering the States (must take and pass COVID test within three (3) days of return flight, not worth the risk of a negative test). -- thank you to everyone who commented on that thread, we have a ton of information and can't wait to go to CR in the future!

Anyway, Boston has been on our short list for a while-- I've been as a teenage and loved it and my wife has never been. There's a ton on this board (thanks Abbita and others!) so I feel pretty comfortable about the things to do there.

It's the remainder of the trip that we're going back and forth on. From Boston should go to the Main coast, or the Cape, or even another destination?

From what I've read, a Cape Cod trip seems to be a more relaxing trip of the two, with the numerous quaint small towns and sandy beaches. A lot of the appeal of a Cape trip would be staying in a centrally located town and spending our days checking out the different towns without much in the way of an itinerary.

Thoughts on side trip to Nantucket? Martha's Vinyard? Should we wait until later in the summer to be there during the Cape Cod season?

Whereas the Maine Coast seems a little more rugged, with there rocky beaches and the towns are a little more spread out. Looks to be the prettier of the two? Might be personal preference though. I've found a lot more threads on TD for Maine coast so it appears to be the more popular of two? At least on this board.

Outside of the Cape and Maine, we've looked at Rockport and Gloucester (might could tie this into a Maine trip?), Vermont seems really pretty, New Hampshire. Definitely want to stick to the smaller towns, with Boston being the only city we go too.

Planned on going to Costa Rica during Memorial Day weekend (to take advantage of the day off) and staying for 10-11 days. Planning to use same timeframe here, but can be adjusted to another time during summer. We're looking for a more relaxing trip (outside of Boston), we can spend anywhere from 8-12 nights. Will be renting a car outside of Boston.

Thank you for any all recommendations!

We just returned from Kennebunkport. If you are looking to relax and do nothing it is a good location. We stayed at the Kennebunkport Inn and recommend it. Martha’s Vineyard is also a good place but we have only been in the off season and things are a lot slower. And we were there pre-Obama so now there is that circus to deal with.

Will check out Kennebunkport! After leaving Boston were are looking to slow down and relax. Not full on beach relax but small town, slow pace relax. Would prefer to be able to find a centrally located town as a base and do day trips from there.

We used it as a base for a couple of day trips.
LL Bean; Old Portland; lighthouses; Lenny the Chocolate Moose. Take the back roads.

I may have missed it, but what time of year are you looking to do this trip? That would highly influence my answer.

Highly recommend visiting Island Creek Oyster farm. Make an afternoon out of it and do the hatchery and boat tour. They had a food truck and band playing.

Island Creek is awesome. But they’re currently closed for the season. That’s why I’m curious when he’s hoping to come up here.

May 26ish to June 4ish is the tentative dates.

Love the idea of an Oyster Farm tour. Will check it out. Did y’all stop by Plymouth while in the area?

I recently did a New England trip and loved it. We flew into Portland, ME and hung around there for a few hours. We drove to Bridgton and spent a night there. There is a large lake that would be a great summer vacation in itself.

From there we drove the Kancamagus highway in New Hampshire (this is beautiful in the fall) to Stowe, VT. This trip takes you through some small towns. We stayed in Stowe for 2 days. There is beer galore in this area, apple orchards, cider, Ben and Jerry's.

We then drove down Scenic Rte 100. This drive could be a trip in itself. There are small towns along the way, water falls, covered bridges, shopping.

Then drove over to Rockport, Gloucester for 2 more nights. These two towns were really cool and definitely worth a trip back. I never spent any time on the coast up there but I can see the appeal of it now and will be going back.

This trip is really a fall trip to see the foliage though. I think for a summer trip it would be awesome to spend the time in Maine and drive up to Acadia. You could probably stay in Portland and go in any direction for side trips.

My recommendation would be a town on the Outer Cape, whether it be Truro or Wellfleet. Much of the protected seashore runs through these two towns, so you get an exceptionally relaxed experience. However, being in each does you give accessibility to a crowd, if you're looking to hang at a bar or restaurant. Provincetown / Commercial Street is a busy place, but plenty of eating and drinking options. Wellfleet is one of my favorite places for an evening dinner - sunset is spectacular over the harbor. Beachcomber is on the ocean side in Wellfleet - very fun outdoor bar that sits on top of the dunes overlooking Cohoon Hollow Beach. Can get a bit crowded, so you may consider Ballston Beach in Truro.

My parents have a place in Truro, so obviously a bit biased towards Outer Cape, but it really does seem to fit what you're looking for.

We’re going June 2-13

Flying into Boston. Driving up to Portland first night. Then driving up to bar harbor for a couple days and checking out Acadia national park. Gonna make our way down with a few stops in rock port , Camden, bath , wicasset.

Then gonna finish up with 5 days on the cape staying near the ferries in Hyannis. Never been to Maine before or cape cod so really looking forward to it.

If you are a baseball fan then Cape Cod in the summer is a must trip. You can catch multiple games a day watching top end college guys play. The scene is Chatham is the best in my opinion - Americana at its best.

Just a heads up, it can still be rather cool here at that time of year. So if you're looking for "beach weather" I'd highly recommend looking at later dates.

We go to Island Creek Oyster Farm pretty frequently (it's only 25-30 minutes from us) but we haven't made the trip to Plymouth yet. It's on the list but we've just never gotten around to it.

Can’t remember the name of the town, but the one at the very tip of the Cape….just be aware that it is a huge destination for gays throughout the summer. We went there before our firstborn arrived back in 2015. It was near the end of August so the season was winding down but there were gays everywhere and a number of the shops catered to them (leather shops and such).

That said we had a blast lol. It was certainly an experience

My wife and I talked last night -- we've decided to stick to Boston and the Cape. From the info y'all given on here plus what we've researched ourselves, Maine would be an awesome trip and one we plan to take, but I think we'd do it a disservice on this trip because of what we're looking to do -- which is Boston + more of a relaxed trip on the back end. I know we could keep Maine relaxed, but I feel like to do that we'd need to stick to the coastal cities and not get into Acadia, which is something we'd love to do. And if we did go to Acadia on this trip, we'd do it a disservice by not getting into the hikes.

Jamie - sounds like y'all had an incredible trip. Would love to take one similar one day during the fall foliage.

Hoops - I've looked at both Wellfleet and Truro and loved them both. The entire outer cape area in general has a lot of appeal to it because of the 'remoteness' comparatively to the rest of the Cape.

Jkyle - sounds like an awesome trip! Maybe we'll run into y'all!

Maroon - catching a CCL game would be awesome, but it's looking more and more like we're going to stick to the late May, early June timeframe. Tough to justify the huge price increase that you see later in the summer. Pumped to catch a Sox game or two when we're in Boston though!

Abita - thanks for the heads up. No issue with the weather. We're not huge beach people in the sense that we want to lay out all day. As long as we can hear the waves and walk along it we'll be happy!

Vinegar - thanks for that ha. I live near Ole Miss so it'll be more of the same -- jokes. Like you said, it'll be an experience. Provincetown looks like an awesome place, can't wait to go!

Wanted to make a separate post from my wall of text above --

As far as the Cape is concerned -- my wife has started looking into Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket as well. Would it be better to stay on the Cape and do a day trip to one or both, or would it be best to stay on MV or Nantucket and do a day trip to the other and then just miss the Cape altogether?

Right now we're looking at spending 4 nights in Boston and 5 at the Cape (when I say Cape I mean the islands and/or mainland). We've talked about splitting it up, say stay 3 days on one of the islands and 2 on the mainland, or vice versa, but we'd both rather find one location and stay there the duration. Neither of us like to spend our vacation moving from one spot to the other.

We did Boston and Martha’s Vineyard this summer. Although it was more difficult to get there, I Loved everything about Martha’s Vineyard. I would suggest you check out the harbor view hotel.

For Red Sox game, do the batting practice tour before game

If you are staying in Hyannis, we stayed at Anchor Inn and it was nice, go drive by Kennedy Compound

MV and Nantucket are very expensive to stay, have done day trips to both Nantucket and MV on the passenger ferry
Very hard to get around Nantucket without a car, MV is an easier day trip to make
