Planning a ski trip and trying different locations. Where’s the best places to ski in Utah?
Posted on 10/28/21 at 2:16 am to scribbler21
I’d try the mountainous regions first.

Snowbird is the best place to go in Utah and probably second to Jackson Hole in the country.
Or if you are going to go off course Powder Mountain where you can go down off any part and hit a bus that loops around the entire place or a CAT ride for 20 bucks anywhere you point

Deer Valley in Park City, Utah.

The Canyons is a solid spot

Beautiful ride going through the mountains from Ogden, and coming out the other side!! Nordic Valley owners were trying to get approval to expand all the way to almost Ogden, but last I heard it’s tied up with pay the right federal people, and get your permission.
In winter that’s my favorite place to go in Utah!!
Beautiful area, not a ton of people, great powder, and no rush. If you’re not into the park city type of places, and don’t require all the ski town stuff, you’ll love it.
If your wanting fancy restaurants, bars, and other things like that you’ll hate it.

Another vote for Pow Mow. Just don't tell anyone else. It is throwback as mentioned above and all about the skiing. Much more affordable than anywhere else also. No frills though so be ready to ski.

What’s your level of skiing?
If you are an advanced skier you’d probably prefer Snowbird and Alta; those have the most powder by a bunch, even though they are just about 10 miles from Deer Valley and Park City.
For first class skiing, with the best groomers and facilities, it’s Deer Valley.
If you have a big group, with a big variety of skill levels, Park City/Canyons is the spot.
Deer Valley and Park City are where you will get the best Resort experience.
I haven’t been to Powder Mountain, but a couple of folks covered it well just above.

Brighton/solitude is a nice and quiet area

If I had OT baller money to invest, I’d buy in Powder Mountain/Nordic Valley for sure. Still plenty of large tracts of land, open areas, and unfortunantly in about 10 years, will be ultra high dollar property..
That area hasn’t been hit yet by all the California rich yet. Only a matter of time. Once that happens it’ll be another Park City, Vail, or Jackson Hole..

Add Alta to the list. Alta is ski only so no snowborders.

I'm usually either a ski host or buy a season pass at Solitude, then buy the 10 pack Alta/Snowbird pass. Alta and Snowbird are great but often have crowds like Colorado resorts. Solitude is in Big Cottonwood Canyon and I can't recall a time I've waited in line for more than two minutes. Terrain is great as well for all levels of skiing. Solitude also has a great ski school and I learned to telemark there.
Really the only resort I avoid skiing is Brighton. Its small, and there are too many out of contol teenagers who don't know what they're doing, or don't care. Snow Basin is good too and noone really goes there either. No crowds. The Park City resorts are good too, perhaps the conditions are a little worse because of the lake effect, weather patterns, and elevation. Those resports focus more on vacationers IMO with Deer Valley being the best experience in that regard. PCMR and The Canyons are good too. You'd be fine anywhere but Brighton IMO.

Snowbasin is awesome, with a few days of Pow Mow mixed in as well. Stay in Ogden and you can use bus transit to both.

My cousin is a professor in Logan and we head there every other winter, and to me it's the best area combination of quality, price, activities, and night-life.

Skiing itself has 3 tiers for the resorts the average person will be most interested in IMO
1) Alta/Snowbird
2) Solitude/Brighton
3) Park City/Deer Valley
Alta/Snowbird is in the upper tier of skiing anywhere on earth. Park City is my favorite US resort though. Depends on how much emphasis you place on skiing versus stuff to do & ski ability.

Alta is arguably the best skiing North America. That side of the mountain gets nuked with snow year in and year out.

+1 for this ranking. AltaBird is amazing but if you’re not at least a single black diamond level skiier I’d go to Solitude/Brighton/PC/Deer Valley.
