I dislike Winston, so I will get that out of the way to start. I dislike him not for his play but for the person he is. Now that that is out of the way, here is the truth about his actual play.

Winston has underperformed the expectations of those who thought he would be great as well as of those who thought he would be a turnover machine. He has been a very boring, average QB that has managed the offense well with minimal mistakes. That is simply the truth of the matter.

This board has become embarrassing with how contentious it has become and how it mimics the poli board. It is divided into two sides: Those who obnoxiously think Winston is performing lights out vs Those who obnoxiously think he is sucking. There is no amount of logic or reason that shows in any of the posts from either camp; it is strictly emotional babbling and spamming.

Winston last night had a few incredible throws that were dropped. Then again he had some incredibly terrible throws that should have been easy tosses. He had a couple of horrendous reads, but he also had some great ones. The thing is though is that he never threw any INTs. The one that could've been picked was a bad throw, but that happens with every QB. Those have been rare.

Winston has had his ups and downs in each game. What's shocking to me is that he hasn't had any MVP type games, nor has he had any boneheaded ones. That's what he was known for coming into this season, and he has surpassed both of those expectations and been just an average to above average QB.

I have seen rational people on this board say this, but unfortunately they are outscreamed by the endless CRABLEGS!!! and HE"S OUR SAVIOR!!! threads/posters.

Now downvote away. I wear my DVS with pride.

I’m not a fan either, but the wr core is awful.

He has noth8ng to work with but AK.

Trout needs to stop making mistakes and become more reliable

IF MT returns and it doesn’t get better, this is it for him.

OK, but I'm going to go ahead and point out that he doesn't have a single NFL receiver he's throwing to at the moment.

I am not pro or con on Jameis. He has been serviceable but is not our long term qb solution. That said, his teammates seem to love the guy. I don’t know if they felt that way about Drew last year. Since the team seems to rally around the guy I am all behind him.

It’s gotten so bad that MDS has become a voice of reason on Saints Talk.

31st in the league in passing. Would weapons help? Yeah, they would.

I think even he knows he could play better. I'm glad to see some fire on the sideline when he jumped Traquan for not knowing where to line up.

Hes got to be more accurate on the short passes. He just has to be.

Expected more from him last night. Thought he turned a corner with the Washington game. But he’s improving each week, I think.

If we can get Rodgers or Wilson next year then I'm for it. Otherwise who's a better option that we can realistically get? I'm not real high on any QBs we could take in the draft next year (Corral won't be available for us). Plus it's very rare to go from Favre to Rodgers like the Packers did, usually when an all time great QB leaves, some struggles at the QB spot usually follows after. Look at the Pats after Brady left, they tried Newton and now they're trying to develop Mac Jones who's had his ups and downs. The Panthers have been trying with Bridgewater and now Darnold after Cam left and it's not going so well. Broncos have been a mess since Peyton. Cardinals have been dogshit since Warner left (except for the couple of years they got Palmer), now they have Kyler who's looking good but they had to draft #1 overall to get him so unless you're saying we tank an entire season to take a chance on a rookie I don't really know where we get the upgrade at (Rodgers and Wilson are pipe dreams imo, will command too much salary).

All in all, going immediately from Brees to Winston is a better than average transition you can hope for. Is he the long term solution? Who knows, he's definitely the best option right now, he doesn't break the bank and is still young with upsides in his game. People expecting Winston to play as good as prime Brees are either delusional or don't quite understand just how good Brees was and just how hard replacing someone of that caliber is, some franchises have spent their entire existence trying to land a QB of that caliber and have yet to succeed. I still want to hold back judgment until we have Thomas/Harris back. Thomas should help with Winston's decisiveness and hopefully won't hold on to the ball so long waiting for WRs to get separation.

Aren't the saints dead last in passing att?

ETA... seems unfair to use passing yds against him when he led the nfl in passing yds his last full season

And that’s part of the unknown issues. Is the team 31st because they don’t have the weapons so Payton is being overly conservative, is the team being overly conservative until Winston builds his rapport (regardless of weapons available), or does Payton just not trust him enough yet.

The team is 31st in passing yards per game, and is 32nd in passing attempts. He finally gets another weapon back in smith, but Smith looked lost out there and like he didn’t care. Plus, the tram gains Smith, but lost 2 of their more explosive weapons in Hill & Harris.

Anyone trying to make an accurate determination of Winston from this small sample size already had their mind made up

People need to go look at Brees' numbers in 2006. His first year with Payton wasn't some HOF performance either. Jameis is actually better in most areas and has less talent currently.

Jameis is not a HOFer but he can be enough to get the job done. Obviously Wilson or Rodgers needs to be the pipe dream but Winston isn't the end of the world either.

Our QB play this year has been no different than it was the last two years.

These idiots have no idea what they're talking about. JW has played well. Last night, in the rain and wind with no weapons at WR, he did just enough to win. He didn't turn the ball over either. For his first year starting in this offense, he's playing pretty well. The bottom line is we need MT back, another reliable WR and a consistent TE. QB IS NOT the problem.

He’s gone from a turnover machine to a game manager now. Given his rocky past I’ll take that at this point with limited weapons for him. Once MT13 is back then the training wheels have to come off to see how he can progress. He has the tools to be a top 15 QB.

Anyone expecting a ton from him right now is expecting him to be a top 3 Qb in the league.

Because it would take a top 3 wb in the league to do anything with the absolute shite we have catching the ball.

If we had anyone not named Kamara to catch the ball his perception would be a lot different. He had 3 good deep balls dropped, we should have won by 2-3 Td’s last night the way the defense shut Seattle down.

Winston needs to be Wilson with the Legion of Boom. Protect the ball, make the occasional big throws, score 20 points, and make sure the defense gets some rest. He has roughly done that this year. We should have had about 15 more points last night but for a dropped easy TD and 2 drives stalled inside the 10.

Winston can improve his pocket presence, he does a bad job stepping up into the pocket when feeling outside pressure. He can hesitate and hold onto the ball too long when making his reads. However, he has shown his ability to scramble, and has done a solid job throwing the ball away when he can or tucking it and not fumbling when he can't (outside of the one against the WFT).

I think he gets a B- right now.

Rather unspectacular, but effective leading to a 4-2 season record. With that said, he'll need a GB type game to compete with Tampa this Sunday. Having MT back would be a huge gain.
