Shouldn't there be more Spanish places in NOLA?

I was reading NOLA was Spanish onwned in the 1800s. There should be more paella places. I would love to see a NOLA creole dish with tomato chicken stew, bean, rice, and salsa.

I assume mexican food is spanish influenced. and salsa is spanish food. Do you find jambalaya better then paella?

Rio Mar was great. They closed back in 2014.

The Spanish might have been in control, but their influence was limited and their time here was met with stiff resistance.

They weren't in control very long either.
The Islenos down the road probably kept more Spanish customs than New Orleans held.

This and also - although I dont have any concrete numbers - I dont think you had the large influx of Spanish immigrants that the French did. Later of course, this would be Africans, Irish, Italians, Croatians, etc...So not sure if there was critical mass of peoples from Spain attempting to cook the food of their homeland.
I still believe that BBQ shrimp is just a mis-translated derivation of gambas al ajillo.

They didn't settle a lot of people here either. The French brought a good many and enticed the Acadians from Canada. The only people the Spanish really got here were the Islenos.

Spanish settlements of Islenos were all over a good portion of South La. St Bernard is really the only place that held on. Spanishtown in BR is little more than a name at this point.

Went in there one night before a show and asked the server what was the quickest thing we could order…bronzed puppy drum was the special and it was recommended. I definitely wanted to lick the plate. We didn’t even ask what the sauce was on the fish, but it was unfamiliar and unforgettable.

They owned it for a but, but they didn’t replace all the people.
FWIW, Lola’s has great paella.

I don't like Spanish or Mexican....nothing creole...no red Spanish rice...no tomatoes in gumbo or jambalaya. I had to take Spanish language class in high school..I hated this class. Give me Cajun culture and authentic Cajun food every day of the week.

Hit it up for happy hour not too long ago. Everything is always on point there. Had 2 drinks each + olives, papas bravas, roasted mushrooms, seared yellowfin tuna, and pork belly with white beans. Killer meal and under $100.
