Generator Owners - Store Generator Dry?

Just received a new generator for the next hurricane, and about to test run it, then store it. Question to you folks: Do I run all the gas out of it and store it dry? Or leave gas in it with Sta-bul and run it a bit each month? Educate a 63 year old generator newbie. And thanks.

Sell it and buy a generator right before next hurricane so you can get that FEMA cheese.

I run it out of the carburetor then add stabilizer and store it. Do a maintenance run on occasions.

Either way is fine. I’m personally storing with gasoline with the Stabil additive and running once a month for 10 minutes with something plugged into it.

Definitely drain the carburetor. Personally, I pull the fuel line and drain the tank before storing as well. For an appliance that I use only every few years and one that needs to be dependable in an emergency, it seems smart to take good care of it. Running fresh gas through it is part of that.
I’ve had the same generator since Hurricane Andrew, 30 years ago. Still fires on the first pull.

Dont put gas in it at all until you need it. I bought a generator after gustav and it sat empty for 13 years until Ida and it cranked right up.

I had mine in the box for 5 years. Started up fine for Ida.

if you can, only run non-ethanol fuel in it...

If it is stored anywhere non-climate controlled every once in awhile it wouldn't hurt to do 5 to 10 pulls on the starter cord to help circulate some oil to prevent rusting of cylinders excetera

For your test run, run it a few hours under load, and do your first oil change.
Have oil stored next to it for when you next use it, and do another oil change before you put it away.
Ethanol-free gas only.
Before putting it away after use, siphon off the unused gas , then prop it up so that the intake from the gas tank is that the lowest point, and crank it again till it runs out. do that a few more times 2 be sure you burn as much of the gas as you can
Disconnect the spark plug, add seafoam, crank it a few times, and store

I test run it with double dose of stabil. Then run all of the fuel out and run it dry. I have had mine since Katrina and it works fine to this day.

Either way works. I leave mine topped off with non ethanol (don't leave room for air to condensate) and run it the first of every month. Put a load on it when running.

If you have fuel in it, start it up and run it, and turn the fuel shut off valve so it empty’s the carburetor.. you can put fuel stabilizer in it, which will help the fuel inside of it last, start it up and run it for about 10-30 mins a month with something plugged into it. Change oil either every 100-150hrs or once a year (which ever comes first) doing this exact method, there has never been a time where I haven’t been able to pull it out and by the 2nd pull it cranks right up and mine is 3-4 years old

A little battery operated fuel pump is a nice cheap accessory to have if you want to drain it.

I drain most the gas out then add sea foam and run it once a month for 10-15min until it runs dry.

Not as important as some posters are going to scare you and say. I’ve had my generator since gustav and it had ethanol gas with stabil in it. Zero problems cranking it up for Ida.
