Dont put gas in it at all until you need it. I bought a generator after gustav and it sat empty for 13 years until Ida and it cranked right up.

I did the same. Bought one before Auburn's Natty game in 2010. Expecting a winter storm that weekend. Didn't ever lose power. Cranked it for the first time last year. Ran for 3 days straight. Haven't used it since.

Yes store it dry

I bought a generator from Amazon after Rita, never did anything to it. Put oil and gas in it for Ida, it cranked right up and ran great.

My parents had a generator, which is now in my shop since they've passed. They had it before Katrina, used it every so often. My brother last used it during the 2016 flood. Regular (ethanol) gas, etc.

We're trying to clean all the rust out of the tank, thinking I might be able to salvage that. Bought a replacement carburetor online, the original was gummed up to hell and back.

What should one do with a metal gas tank? I bought a new generator after ida and this one has a metal tank. I have read drain it and use fogging oil and I also read fill it up and add Sti bill or sea foam but run the carb dry.

How important is it to use only non-ethanol gas?

If you’re run stabil or sea foam in it then it’ll be fine. Otherwise it’ll dry rot or gunk up everything.

Me, I would drain it.

I mentioned that I'm trying to rescue a gas tank from a generator- it wasn't just orange-rusted, it has a lot of chunks and scales in it. I poured some rust remover in it and left it for days, and did the gallons of vinegar for days trick too.

This wasn't from a decade, it was from maybe 4-5 years... which you might well go before you use it again.

Just drain it, it's what, 20 dollars of gas. Use it in lawnmowers, or start a bonfire with it.
