Lol, I'm 5'11 220lbs...have already lost 4lbs in 2 weeks. Actually your right for serious overweight folks, the apnea is worse. Losing weight does lessen apnea in people, not all but many. Being someone in your 40s versus 20s is different these days when it comes to staying in a good body bro...

I know everyone on the OT is an "athlete" and "big boned", but unless you're fined at work for being "under" a certain weight, most Americans are way, way fatter than they think they are.

We're surrounded by fat now so much we barely notice it any longer, especially in ourselves. You are not merely overweight - you're clinically obese (albeit slightly). Even if (unlikely) you're carrying a lot of "good" weight (muscle and bone), that is still a strain on every system. You're heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, joints, etc., still bear the strain.

Realistically, you should be targeting 190 or thereabouts (and that would still be technically overweight). You're around 40 pounds overweight and may be in denial about it.

I'm not fat shaming. I'm fatter than I think, too, baw.

I have been on one for two years. I was at 95 per hour and now down to 4 so it can be done. I use the Respironics dream wear mask that covers the mouth. You can buy all the supplies on Amazon. It still sucks but after a year or so I am use to it and it has definitely made me feel better. Ask you doc for Ambien it will help with the sleep and you can take if for a year with very little side effects.

You need to keep trying. I was actually diagnosed twenty years ago and did not do anything about it and it almost killed me. Sleep Apnea is nothing to play around with. You need to make it work.

My first machine had the damn big arse mask - I felt like the guy from the alien movie. When the creature was anchored to the dudes face. I hated the damn thing.
I’ve been using the nose pillows for about 18 months.

There is no doubt that you're aggressively managing this problem. I would ask about your exercise regimen as that is the only thing that works on some folks' blood pressure. It should help with sleep and weight management as well, although the body tends to get to a new equilibrium of weight, particularly if there isn't a radical adjustment to diet.

The seriousness which a person takes health problems (without becoming obsessed of course) usually correlates to their success in overcoming them. Obviously none of us can change our genetics. Lifestyle and active treatment are about the only things we can control.

Congrats on working through it.

CPAPs your best bet with that AHI.

If you're struggling with the autopap getting your ahi normalized, then you may be someone who needs to have a titration study and consider either regular CPAP or doing a bipap settings for better treatment.

Oral appliance unlikely to cure an AHI that high.

Surgical options are there but won't be as effective as CPAP. Technically over the ahi limit for something like the inspire, but a lot time insurances would still approve placement even with that AHI.

let me tell you ,I used to be a regular at the gym but after years of repeated severe apnea body was going thru torture. At first, I had no idea why I was feeling like this until Dr asked me about sleep issues. Nothing worse than feeling like you wanna just go to sleep every minute of the day, all day while your trying to perform at work much less wanna work cause ur so fatigued you wanna just go home. It's torture like someone else said. I quit regular workouts prolly last 2 years and have only gone here or there to gym simply because of the fatigue and mental digression from the apnea, all I wanted to do was go home after work and go to sleep. With this new energy I made a commitment to myself that once I feel totally better I'm gonna be back at the gym for my 4 days a week like before.

they started me on the full face mask which basically covers mouth and they have an opening in mask where my nostrils are. It isn't too bad but I need to improve, it's a matter of getting the right humidity for me so I don't get a dam drip in my throat and start coughing. The air that hits thru the nose is rough for me so I'm waiting for a mouth only "oracle mouth only" that was shipped a cpl days ago. I'll definitely get it straight.

at 224 I was considered obese at doctor. Lol. I am totally comfortable at 200 but yeah 195 or less would be money for me. I agree totally what your saying but im not in denial. Tbh, it bothers me but I was just beat down exhausted and almost dgaf because of the fatigue. Trust me when I say I'm gonna get it straight. I'm feeling better. I just wanna have my events down to 5 or less for a few days and then I'll commit. One step at a time for me.

CPAP has been nothing short of life changing for me. I was having about 9 events/hr, down to 2 or so now. My biggest symptom was just exhaustion.. I was worn out every day, and by 4-5pm I felt ready for bed. It was miserable. I also had recurring tendonitis in my right knee, elbow, shoulder, and foot from exercising. All of that cleared up after about 2 months on the CPAP.

I feel your pain. I just did a sleep study and my AHI was 16 which puts me at moderate. Did the CPAP study and am now just waiting on my machine to arrive. I’m not obese at all trust me. I’m like 140#. But one day a out of the blue a few years ago my wife said I just started snoring and I have been ever since. I think it would only get worse for me. I am ALWAYS tired. Doesn’t matter if I go to bed for 4 hours or 14 hours. It kind of bothered me a bit that no one understood that I was just tired and there was nothing I could about it. I’m starting with the nose only mask and I’ll go from there. My biggest issue will be i like to sleep on my stomach and I don’t thing that’s going to be feasible going forward. I can’t wait to start.

If you haven't already, you might want to go to an ENT and have a Ct scan of your nose and have your tonsils looked at when you breathe in. I've never been able to use my BIpap due to allergy issues with the masks, and when I went to see an ENT about other options I found out my tonsils were huge and blocking me off when I breathed through my nose, and that I had a massive deviated septum. Just went through surgery to fix both, so hopefully it fixes my apnea issues a bit.
