I remember the same bull shite that was the spin drs pushing O. All the bull shite for a coach that didn’t beat a top 100 P5 rush defense that had Fournette YET Alleva hired that moron.
Who EXACTLY has Napier beat that was a P5 in a major conference that was either first or second in that conference. Better yet what SEC school has he beaten in the top 3 of the conference at the end of the season?
Fleck beat P5 teams at Central Michigan and LSU passed. He has had some success at Minnesota but isn’t setting the world on fire.

Napier is the head coach of a school with vastly less talent than any power 5 team. It would take him 20 years to develop that program into a juggernaut. It would also require loads of money and support. ULL doesn’t have the resources as an LSU.

Despite that he’s made them very competitive.

He built a quality team.

That’s all you can ask for from a guy coaching a kid major.

Napier is a candidate that definitely requires extra due diligence

Now if Woodward talks to his 50 different “football people” he trusts and they all say Napier is a slam-dunk to have success wherever he’s at because of his process and system, then I certainly don’t have a problem with handing him the keys. I trust Woodward to do the due diligence required and decide one way or another

But I totally get and understand the concern many have in his success translating on a MUCH bigger stage

And while Fickell has had success at a level above Napier, really the same kind of due diligence and questions would be necessary for Fickell as well.

I still have my heart set on Matt Campbell, but if we end up with Fickell or Napier I can get on board. There may not be as many “sexy” names in this years coaching search, but I really think we have a pretty solid and deep list of potential candidates to choose from

It’s as close to a “One Of Us” narrative like in 2016. Sad how low Ed has brought expectations.

Maybe the dumbest thing circulating this board right now is the idiots who want to compare Napier to a "one of us" hire.

He's not from around here. He just happens to be coaching in Lafayette currently. And he also happens to be a damn good coach.

He wouldn't be at the top of my list for a new hire, but I wouldn't be furious with the hire. I don't think it ends up being him anyway.

Napier is 1-4 against ranked opponents at ULL best bowl game Lending Tree
Fickell is 5-6 against ranked opponents at Cincy best bowl game Sugar (looks fo be going to another or Playoff)

Urban 2-0 against ranked opponents at Utah best bowl fiesta (only there for 2 season)
Kelly 10-5 against ranked opponents at Cincy best bowl orange and sugar (there for 4 seasons)

Facts > feelings

I don’t think Napier is the obvious choice or front runner, however this is nothing like 2016. For the simple fact that Napier has multiple SEC offers and NO ONE wanted Orgeron then, no team wanted him as head coach after 2019, and he would maybe be a top 3 candidate at Northwestern State.

So are we supposed to pretend that ULL is on equal grounds as Utah and Cincy?

You aren't comparing apples to apples here. You are cherry picking numbers to fit into a narrative.

I love it when the Napier threads go like this shut down like LSU's run game in 2021

This is a stupid take. It's absolutely nothing like the O situation. Napier isn't at the top of my list, but he's definitely not an O level hire where it's more about emotion than football coaching ability. You can believe LSU shouldn't be going after coaches that haven't coached at a P5 school and that's totally fine, but Napier is certainly viewed as an up and comer due to his coaching ability, not because he's "one of us".

O pre LSU is not remotely comparable to any coach with an overall competent body of work.

Also, Napier is from Tennessee.

Because if he wasn’t coaching at ULL one hour down the road most people on here wouldn’t even know he existed.

Replace ULL with Texas State or Georgia Southern and these topics wouldn’t be a thing.

Exactly how I feel. It's not about lowering expectations. It's who you can get. Check out the Texas coaching search from a year ago if you think we can get any coach that we want.

If Saban retired Napier would likely be in Bama’s top 5. The others may be too but he is highly regarded in Tuscaloosa. I have heard from a few knowledgeable Bama supporters (12 months ago) that if Dabo didn’t accept their offer when Saban retires they could see Napier being the next coach.

Napier to LSU may not happen but don’t think he wouldn’t be a great hire. Certainly some questions from the outside looking in but none regarding his work ethic, character, coaching ability or recruiting.

Also kudos to the ULL AD for keeping him in Lafayette so long.

Napier is a good if not great coach. However, he hasn’t proven that he can win at the highest level.

The thing that was baffling about the O hire is that it was an unnecessary risk. It’s a top 10 job. LSU should be fishing in much deeper waters.

Napier could do well at LSU. But there are significantly more qualified and less risky candidates out there.

I could live with it also. It’s gonna be hard to match my disgust level of the O hiring. So maybe my tolerance level has gone up. Thanks Alleva.
