How did our O-line get so bad?

I can’t understand this, how can we not find quality O-linemen? Gigantic athletic physical dudes are everywhere in Louisiana, we generally have a ton of talent on the O-line, what happened?

I’m not as locked in on recruiting as many of you, did we just miss on big time recruits? How can LSU possibly have so little talent on the line?

it doesn't help that we keep jumping all over this place with coordinators and schemes. plus losing Dare was a major blow. Also we have an ivy league center. how many ivy league centers have played in the NFL?

We run a zone blocking scheme. The guard center combos (scoop to strong side, slip to weak side) should be moving the defender a few yards before the combo to the backer. Shanahan and Ingram get absolutely no push. It is actually the main reason for the terrible o-line play.

Right. That's why we have so many players in the NFL.

We’ve had barely any attrition. We lost 1 lineman from last year and our OL barely has transfers. Guys are playing out their eligibility at the position, so you can’t use attrition as an excuse. We just aren’t recruiting and developing the way we need to.

Let's see

LT - 1 - Freshman will get better, 1 3 star off hurt, 1- RS Fresh not Ready

LG - Senior who has not lived up to Hype

C - Ivy League (nuff said)

RG - Former DT should still be playing DT as much as he gets pushed into MJ's lap. 1 - rG (AB) slow and over weight

RT - Off't Hurt but steady

Physically weak, especially in their legs.
Awful oline blocking schemes devised by offensive coaches....just antiquated and very dependent on having superior physical abilities to execute...which is not even close to there. This is playing to your weakness rather than your strengths.
Because of 1 and 2 above, our best running plays will be quick hitters straight ahead or misdirection/counter plays where a dlineman is tricked into gap pursuit and blocked by a pulling olineman, and the rb cuts off that block running to daylight. Other than adding some razzle dazzle reverse/pass and maybe an occasional qb draw/option run....this is our only hope.
we have to junk our present run game schemes in the toilet and flush them out. We don't have the horses up front to make the present blocking scheme work at all....and it should be more than obvious to O and staff by now.
Sometimes coaches are just stubborn and blame the players for lack of execution, but these players don't have the athletic strength and agility to make the present zone blocking scheme work. LF couldn't gain 50 yds a game with this group/scheme.
Other times the coaches just simply don't know any other way to scheme....and unfortunately, I think that is where we are. It has been going on too long for me to thing otherwise.

There has not been enough in quanity or quality at that position group. Those are just the facts. We have highly ranked recruiting classes because of the high rankings of the skill players we recruit, not because of the linemen we sign. And we do not need to go trapesing all over the country acting like there are not really good lineman in Louisiana. They are here in the state on both sides of the ball. For whatever reason, O has not been recruiting the oline position group very effectively. Hopefully Davis can turn that around. We have to recruit better lineman and develop them. And they need to be big. Champion are build from the inside out, not the outside in.

Trusting the talent of highly recruited Kardell Thomas that doesn't have the work ethic to compete

Starting LT gone

The LT2 has been hurt

The LT3 was the backup center

LT4 is 6’2”

Ed Ingram has not been happy since Cregg was fired

Shanahan is a mid level SEC center

Hines is just not good

Deculus has started a lot of games but was able to play another season because he is not a coveted pro prospect

And the coaching has been bad. The last time the OL www good was when Joe Brady took over in 2019 around the 5th game

James Cregg was an awful coach, an even worse recruiter. Zone blocking scheme will get better next year with the infusion of talent...we hope.
