What about polyester thermals? No go?
Should I do wool thermals for base layers along with wool socks?

Yes. Wool won't make you cold when it gets wet from sweat.

You want merino wool socks, smartwool or darntough are some of the brands to look at.

It's mostly personal preference. I have both. I tend to grab a wool top and poly bottoms but couldn't tell you why.
