The 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro Has A Lower Payload Rating Than The Ford Ranger

The TRD Pro has a max payload of 1,455 pounds, as Expedition Portal noted. The Ranger, on the other hand, will support from 1,478 pounds up to 1,905 pounds, depending on the trim. Notice that the term carmakers usually steer you towards is “up to.”
The new Tundra’s payload rating is up to 1,940 pounds, but the TRD Pro will carry much less. Funny how the “up to” phrase doesn’t apply to price, though. When discussing price, the clause is almost always “starting at.” Toyota is not the only company that does this; all carmakers do this. Phrases like “up to” and “starting at” are common practice.
But it’s a practice that, in this case, can make the Tundra’s specs confusing to those who aren’t familiar with pickups. There’s a difference between trucks that can tow and haul, and those that are considered performance trucks. The Tundra TRD Pro is very much in the performance camp.

By no means I am a Toyota advocate because I hate them. But the TRD Pro is in line with the other brands specialty trucks. The Raptor and the trx have a much lower payload than the F-150 and the Ram because of the added weight of the suspension system and the general fact that they are not meant to carry a load. Will they do it? Yes, but not as well as the normal models.

It easily could be higher, but the chief engineer on the TFL video of the launch clearly said ride comfort and quality were top considerations for the truck. They put rear coil over suspension to make the ride better. They could have gone back with leaf springs, increased payload, and made ride quality suffer. But that was not there goal.
Its funny people don't think Toyota has researched the market. They have and they found a lot of new truck buyers are coming from Luxury Suv's. They also know most people don't max out payload. They also know your average guy tows about 8000 pounds max and is more of a weekend warrior type then an everyday tower.
So they set out to build a truck that rides like a luxury vehicle and has extra towing capacity for the average guy, but they weren't trying to be class leaders in towing or payload.
We will see if they hit what the market wants or not.

This truck is marketed for the Dallas real estate professional that doesn't want to lease a range Rover but wants something masculine.

I have a cousin that is high up in production... The basic package is poor branding. It is the equivalent of calling a Ford ranger s full sized truck. A few years ago the boss tundras were better than most American brands. Dude started out on production line and then moved up to logistics, quality control, and supply chains. Sly country boy that isn't afraid to tell truth or talk shite. Will ask him for some input on this. He got a basic degree in industrial manufacturing... Basically an advanced level of welding/process type stuff but below and engineering degree. Had a couple of friends do this at state and all of them upper level management at car manufacturers. Basically a welding hands on type degree with business mixed in... Kinda wish I would have gone that route as opposed to finance. Straight shooter with the ability to have say so in manufacturing processes. Kinda of a mechanical engineering but with more emphasis on application experience in college.

He’s right. The new Tundra and the new Tacoma will share the same basic chassis.

This. I’m switching from a car to a hybrid tundra next year most likely. I have no need for a truck with my job and may hitch a trailer to it once a year or so. I’m only buying one because I really just want something I can throw shite in the back of when needed. I hate having to ask a buddy to borrow their truck when I need one so I’m just getting my own.

so if you need to use your truck as a truck....buy the Honda.
