The so called 50/50 ball. There are really five outcomes not 2.

Incomplete, complete, int. Offensive PI and Defensive PI
I believe that in today’s game with superior athletes and the rules as they are allowing chicken fighting, etc. the offense had the advantage. I think it’s imperative that the good QBs identify one on one coverage on superior athletic WRs and throw them the ball downfield when the opportunity is there. They have the advantage.
The results can be big yardage, or a defensive PI more often than an int or an offensive PI. It’s a huge weapon in the modern game. I am glad Max and Peetz are finally seeing this.
Now if the pass is incomplete it still serves a purpose. You loosen up the D, and keeps the safeties out of the run game.
Too QBs in college know their people and they learn the so called 50/50 ball is a key weapon and your stuff WR died by have yo be “open”.

No he's not wrong. Certainly the game has changed to favor offense and if a DB sneezes it's PI. That's 15 yds. Positive yards.
And the fact that prior to last night, Max had attempted 2 whole passes longer than 20 yds in the air all season.....opposing DCs would see that and know they don't have to respect the over the top game from LSU.
Well, first pass last night was over the top and several others followed, largely successful. Now DCs realize we'll take shots and have to respect it, especially with the athletes we have at WR

I don't understand why people think jump balls = bad.
To me it's like saying back shoulder receptions/throws are bad because "the ball was behind the WR". Well yeah- that's the point.
It is a staple of a WRs repertoire. You do have to know your opponent. You don't want to try it against a 6-2, 38 in vertical CB. But if you are a good WR and know all the tricks such as getting hands up late, not letting them see your eyes get big, coiling up, etc. it is just as viable as any other method to fight for position and snatch a ball out of the air.

The way I see it LSU is loaded with freak athletes and top talent at WR so it would be a waste to not throw a couple of "50/50" balls. As other posters have mentioned, LSU feasted on them in 2019.

Pretty sure it’s still 50/50

And your worst case scenario is an interception which is basically a punt if you throw it deep.

So there's 0 chance of defensive PI resulting in 15 yds?

You’re really reaching.
Max would’ve had 3 picks against a legit defense. If he pulls that shite against any other team on our schedule that’s what will happen.
Sad thing is he probably thinks it’s cool because it worked out against a MAC team

Everyone throws 50/50 balls. ALabama makes a living off of them.
The updated offense worked well for Max last night.

"The 20/20/20/20/20 ball" doesn't roll off the tongue.

quote:The other key advantage is that the WR knows when and where the ball is coming earlier than the DB most of the time and if they are smart and don't telegraph too early, they can turn a 50/50 throw into a much higher percentage. Burrow even said in an interview that it was a big advantage for him once he learned to trust his guys to go up and get those balls.

There are no such thing as 50/50 balls because LSU's athlete's are better than everybody else's athletes with the exception of Alabama. Not to mention that the receiver has the huge advantage of seeing the ball first. In fact, when Joe Borrow was at LSU, he threw those balls anytime the defenders back was turned to him because he knew they wouldn't see the ball coming until it was too late.
People claiming that Max's balls were 50/50 balls last night are people still butt hurt because Myles isn't the starter and they don't want to acknowledge the obvious. Which is Max is better than Myles.

quote:There's another aspect to add to what you said there. And it is in the difference between "throwing into coverage" and "throwing a jump ball". This goes for back shoulder throws too by the way because QBs and WRs are taught to put them high.

The added aspect is, because you are right- the WR has a better idea that the ball is coming than the DB (assuming S isn't communicating), a high ball takes longer to react to than a low ball because the DB has to coil up and launch. If the ball is low the DB just has get in the way. For a jump ball, or a high back shoulder, the DB has that added reaction time to get a piece of body in the way much less get hands ready to INT it.
That time difference when your WR is good at high pointing is often the difference between a reception and a non-reception.

Is it really a 50/50 ball if you believe your athlete is better than theirs. Seems the odds are slanted in your favor if that is the case
Posted on 9/19/21 at 7:27 pm to doubleb
Joe burrow was throwing a ton of them. He said if you go man on our receivers we are better than you and it’s a risk he was willing to take. And he was right. If you have better athletes it’s not really 50/50

This is why I felt 6’4” Brian Thomas was a must for this class

Go back and check out 2019, Burrow threw sometimes to the 50/50 because he knew what Chase and Jefferson could do.
