Went to the ER last night. Dad has pneumonia.

Sitting in the waiting room was an eye opener.

Completely empty at 6pm. Filled up by 7pm. Not one of these people needed to be in the ER. It's like they had nothing better to do.

Mexican's & AA's?

They have no insurance or doctor/pediatrician so they load up the ER with trivial illnesses because the ER can't turn them away. It's ridiculous, but it happens everywhere.

The ER waiting room has been like that every time I’ve had to go in the last 10 years.

If you’re in the ER waiting room longer than maybe an hour or two. you really didn’t need to be there and the staff has definitely deprioritized you. Every time I’ve gone (or been sent/driven there, the waiting room is full of drug seekers and dindu’s and they’ve taken me right back due to an actual emergency.

I went to ER to get an IV about a month ago (covid).

I was literally the only patient.

Ghosttown in waiting room.

People already abused the ER and treated it as their own PCP. Seems like it's magnified since covid started.

My wife is an ER nurse so I get to hear all the dumb shite people come to the ER for. All these people use the ER instead of having a primary care physician and never pay their bills. People will show up for a cut that requires a bandaid, toothaches, the homeless make shite up so that they can get a turkey sandwich and a place to hang out for a few hours. It's ridiculous.

My late wife was an ER nurse at BR General working the 3 to 11 shift - she had some stories to tell every evening. Many drug addicts know what symptoms to fake to get a fix. The ER nurses and MDs get real weary of some of the stuff they hear.

I suppose one saving grace is that a patient can only have 1 person sit with them now.

Before covid massive groups of people would pile up in the ER waiting room with a patient. Like a damn excursion for them, suck up all the AC and raid every vending machine in sight.

Brought one of my kids in several years ago on a Friday. Severe dehydration for the stomach bug. As we were leaving, I complimented the nurses and Dr and wished them a good weekend. One of the nurses replied that with LSU and Saints both playing in the afternoon, it probably wouldn’t get very busy until the evenings when the games were over. She was on days so it wouldn’t be that bad for her shift. Found that interesting.

I worked in an ER for 8 years. This one dude homeless dude would come in in the middle of the night knowing he would get a lunch baggie. But our bag lunches always had turkey sandwiches, and he'd bitch and moan every time saying, "And don't give me that damn turkey sandwich." shite was sad...but hilarious at the same time.

This was 10+ years ago so we still used paper charts, so it wasn't uncommon at all to have a homeless person come in by ambulance and the actual chief complaint on the charts was "Patient states he's hungry per EMS"

Definitely. But there's only so many ERs they can visit. Once you become a repeat visitor and they can pull your history, they know for sure who is a drug seeker and can usually tell that person they ain't getting what they want.

Yep

I didn't work directly in the ER recently living in the area but in DFW now, the ERs are a ghost town during Cowboys games.

Bad news, now instead of waiting inside those same people now just gather in the parking lot or near the entrance. I had to go bring her lunch one day and there was a group of about 15 people hanging out in the parking lot, bbq pit going and all. I later asked her what was going on, turned out one of their 16 year old relatives had shot himself in the leg trying to take a selfie so they all hung out at the hospital most of the day, they were there when I dropped her lunch and were still there when she left that night after her 7pm shift.

That's true, but in the mid-1960s when my wife was working ER, you didn't have computers to help with this. The addicts would try different ERs and different shifts to get their stuff.
