LSU QB position is in great shape. Never thought I'd live to see the day...

Garrett Nussmeier just keeps raising the standards throughout this fall camp. After a spring session where the early enrollee certainly looked like a player who needed some time to figure out the speed of the college game, he has far exceeded any expectations over the last few weeks.
Nussmeier went 18-of-32 for 308 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in the second scrimmage to back up the excellent first scrimmage where he completed 11-of-17 passes for 225 yards and three touchdowns. Orgeron raved about one particular play during the second scrimmage where the offense was in a 4th-and-27 situation and Nussmeier delivered on a 70-yard pass down the field.
Seeing consistency out of the true freshman quarterback was one of the areas the coaching staff wanted to see improvement and Nussmeier is delivering.

This is certainly not to suggest that Johnson is in any danger of losing the starting job. He went 11-of-19 for 125 yards and a touchdown with the first team while Nussmeier has worked primarily with the second and third teams in the scrimmages.
"He's had some big plays, Max is our starting quarterback but I have no problem that if Max goes down Garrett getting in the game," Orgeron said. "That doesn't mean Garrett can't compete for the starting position but right now I feel good that Max is our starting quarterback and Garrett's behind him."
quote:
One of the offseason issues Nussmeier needed to address was being more protective of the football and not allowing careless mistakes to ruin otherwise good drives. To correct some of the problems he endured in the spring, Nussmeier spent countless hours with offensive coordinator Jake Peetz, learning the offense front and back while also grasping better control of the protections and defensive looks

Please. Against 2nd or 3rd stringers in a non realistic game situation. Nothing to get excited for OR worried about.
They probably tried to blitz him and he went over the top.

not good...
Uh how? You want your back up to push your starter. Iron sharpens iron. Nuss is no ordinary freshman.

Why do you have to be the glass is half empty guy? I just don't get it. Regardless what string he did anything against, it's something to get very excited about. I very much love what Nuss is doing for being a true freshman!
QB room looks to be very promising for now and the future!

Well, Semjase (And a few others) said many times during the Dark Ages of LSU QB history that you don't recruit Athletes/Glorified Running Backs to play QB in the SEC. You recruit QB's that can accurately throw a football, go through progressions, read Defenses and process information quickly. They finally got that here.
Now get some OL's in here that can dominate physically, not have mental breakkdowns and are superior in that Processing Information thing. (Not enough on the roster currently)

Mainly replying to the idea that it means something bad about the defense. We didn't see the throw so no idea about how it transpired.
4th and 27 isn't a real situation you'd find yourself in a game. They were just letting them play.

That seemed to be the problem with Louisiana high school football for the longest time, especially in New Orleans.

It is unless Max goes down "KNOCK ON frickING WOOD"!
Having just 2 QB's on scholly is sketchy, hope the WO is coming along.

You sound worried.
Why would a QB having a good performance we worrisome?
Did I misunderstand Orgeron when he named several DBs who played the entire game?
Since Ricks, Stingly, Mcglothern, and Ryan are injured it forces others to play the entire scrimmage.
