Haven't seen this posted, sorry if it has. VERY interesting image released as a teaser, especially if you know your Tolkien lore...

Ok Nerd. Can you just explain what is so interesting and stop being cryptic?

Looks like a picture from any lotr. You could have told me this was from return of the king and I wouldn't have known any better.

It looks cool, but I’m still not liking everything behind the scenes I’m hearing.

Well the Two Trees in the background are a dead giveaway that this didn’t take place in Gondor.

Are those the Two Trees of Valinor?

I thought the Valinor had big lamps destroyed by the big spider Ungoliant

Yea. The series is supposed to take place in the 2nd age, but this is a photo from the 1st age. I didnt think Amazon has the rights to the 1st age.

True, but I have no idea when the Amazon series is supposed to take place
ETA: Thanks to iwyLSUiwy for clarifying!

Those preceded the Two Trees. Melkor destroyed the lamps and the symmetry of Arda doing vast damage to almost all of it where the Valar fled to the West. There Yavanna sang into existence the Two Trees and Nienna watered them with her tears. Ages later shortly before the Awakening of Men, Melkor and Ungoliant destroyed the two trees using Ungoliant to poison them as well.

Before the First Age. These were the Years of the Trees. Only the Valar, Maier, Elves, and Orcs were around during that time. Men, Dwarves, Hobbits, and Ents would come in the First Age.
And I’m guessing this is from a Prologue. It’s important to get the background of the Trees since the White Tree of Numenor is directly descended from the silver tree.

These are moments that make me mad about how bad my memory is. Thats right. But couldnt it be either before or during? If that is Laurelin and Telperian they were still alive in a portion of the 1st age since you dont exactly know when the 1st age started.

First thought, we could have a prologue, like the LOTR movies did. Jackson didn't have the rights to the 2nd Age, but could show the Last Alliance in order to set the stage.
So... technically the image is from BEFORE the First Age- the Ages start with the Sun and Moon. The Trees were before that.
This could be a flashback, showing:
a) the first Elves to come to Valinor (the 3 Houses of the Eldar),
b) it could be Galadriel... she saw the Trees and her hair caught the light of Laurelin, the golden tree
quote:
The Silmarillion repeatedly states that those Elves who saw the Two Trees were mighty, with the light of Aman in their faces. As vassals of the Valar, the trees somehow bestowed otherworldy power and understanding on those exposed to them. Galadriel in particular had an affinity to Laurelin, as her hair was said to have captured the golden light of that tree.
c) this could be Melkor/Morgoth, on the way to destroy the Trees... Ungoliant could be just out of view, behind him.
d) it could be Sauron, looking upon the trees, before he turned to service with Melkor; I don't know when he swapped sides. But he originally was a Maia in the service of Aule.
It's hard to tell much on the person, because while I think the figure's hip is wide (and thus female), that could be pose. And the neck and shoulders look broad, suggesting male. Looks to be a sword on the left side; something straight is coming away.
Any of these possibly could be in a prologue, explaining what's up. If it's Elves in general, it explains the Elves; if it's Galadriel, it gives her early history as well (and I'm pretty sure she's the last Elf left in Middle Earth to have seen the Trees in person).
If it's Sauron or Morgoth, it shows the beginnings of the overall conflict.
One other possible source of the image: the Palantirs (the Seeing Stones). Gandalf remarked (in the books, I don't remember if he touched on it in the movies), that with at least 1 of the Stones, you could look back on Eldamar, and apparently back in time if you chose. He mused on the idea of watching Feanor craft the Silmarils through one. Feanor made the Silmarils while the Trees were still alive, so if you could watch him, you certainly could look at the Trees too.
I think it's very intriguing, because this shows a pretty deep dive into Tolkien lore, not just a casual "let's have Elves" thing. That's encouraging to me, the more they stay true, the better it should be.
And any hints of Valinor and the Valar may indicate just how much money they are going to spend... that's basically a glimpse into Heaven/Eden. I don't think they do that on the cheap.

Probably the main taka away could be that the show is going to show some from an earlier time than expected. Like way early on. I doubt there will be whole episodes dedicated to this timeframe, but you'll at least get glimpses or maybe a prologue.

It is and the place was no doubt beautiful. Valinor is the place where Frodo and Bilbo went at the end of LotR.

I'm trying to stay optimistic, and won't complain until I see episodes that make me disappointed.
I totally get it; the current cultural climate makes it unlikely that we get the version we want to see. But there's always hope.
If they show the Trees, they might show Morgoth, or bits from the War of Wrath.

quote:And only the Eldar (the Elves that went over the Sea) would have seen the Trees. The Elves that stayed in Middle Earth didn't look upon them, there was a mountain range that blocked the light from directly shining on Middle Earth. That's why those Elves preferred starlight.

The Eldar didn't travel back to Middle Earth until after the Trees were destroyed (with the exception of Elwe..., another deep dive into lore. But although he's long dead by the Second Age, he might be mentioned, because he's the one Elf who married a Maia and had a child- and his line led directly to Elrond and the Numenoreans).
