LSU's Student Health Center was built atop a cemetery on the northern end of campus — likely atop what had been intended as the final resting place for enslaved plantation workers, according to a university professor.

Andrew Sluyter, a professor in LSU's Department of Geography and Anthropology, has researched the university for years, developing vast knowledge of the campus’ history. After seeing reports about slave cemeteries beneath campuses of multiple southern universities, Slutyer theorized the same could be true here.

“I was reading through newspaper articles about different universities in the South finding these old slave cemeteries on their campus,” Sluyter said. “So, I started looking at the old maps, and sure enough there was a slave cemetery right on the edge of what would become LSU property.”
