52 MPG Average By 2026

That’s where the Biden administration is hoping to take the fleet-wide fuel economy average for carmakers in five years’ time, the EPA announced Thursday. 52 miles per gallon would be roughly 9 MPG more than the Trump administration had proposed by that same year. From Reuters:

The Democratic administrations of Biden and Obama have pushed for stricter fuel efficiency standards to reduce greenhouse gas omissions [sic] and fight climate change. In March 2020, Trump’s Republican administration rolled back Obama’s standards to require only 1.5% annual increases in efficiency through 2026. Obama had required 5% annual increases.

The EPA said through the 2026 model year “the new vehicle fleet likely will continue to consist primarily of gasoline-fueled vehicles.” It estimates electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric will account for 8% of new U.S. vehicle sales by 2026.

quote:

Data for 2021 and 2020 isn’t available yet, but in January the EPA revealed that fleet-wide efficiency actually slid to 24.9 MPG, two-tenths less than in 2018. The blame for this was laid on customers flocking to SUVs and larger vehicles in increasing numbers and shunning the most efficient models offered by each carmaker.

And some of you are wondering why cars like the Mustang and Camaro are turning into electric sedans. I hate to see what they will do to pickup trucks.

frick THIS

This is how you get shitty fricking cars that only hippies like to drive. Get the government out of the way and let the market decide. If everyone wants to drive a Tesla, let the demand dictate it. If everyone wants to drive a a got damned muscle car that gets 2 gallons to the mile, let the market dictate it.

frick this government overreach.

This will directly cause more deaths from accidents but who gives a shite I guess if it makes some idiots feel good for a couple days.

Does that include miles behind a tow truck for the Chevys?

Cars and trucks are getting better gas millage every year. It's through improved technology. My car automatically stops its engine when I am at a stoplight or stop sign. It all adds up. Given the trajectory and increased use of electric and hybrids that goal is possible and you still drive your F150 and Ram 1500 like an idiot.

Oh I also drive a Ram 1500 occasionally.

I’ll be honest, I’m kinda retarded but I assume that to make the vehicles light enough to achieve that mpg, you’d have to build it out of materials or assemble it in a way that wouldn’t stand up to collisions as well, thus resulting in deaths.

You can get a medium duty truck that's exempt from the rules.

Start with this:

Then add a pickup bed:

You can already anticipate the whining for new taxes since the gas taxes fall as MPG goes up.

Hardly any vehicles midsized or larger will get that. They may show it in closed testing with the air conditioner off, no other electronics activated, turn off power steering, turn of traction control…. Basically anything that makes driving “modern” is disabled during these tests.

Don’t get me wrong. I’d love for my truck to get 40 mpg if it can still run like a truck… I just don’t see that happening soon.

My F150 comes with this feature and it's the worst fricking idea ever. You have to disable it every time you start the engine.

Man, who elected these tyrant dictators in the administrative state?

What else will the EPA “mandate”?

How about the CDC? Eviction moratorium in contradiction to the USSC.

If fuel mileage is top priority it will have to borrow from things like safety. You can’t make the safest car possible at the same time as the most fuel efficient possible. Biden chose efficient so that’s what they’ll go with.

I hate this feature. The absolute roughest time on any mechanical device is the starting and stopping of work. It humming along at idle is pittance in terms of wear and tear.

Also, how much gas does it actually save?
