Yeah. I'll be looking at anything to make it more fuel efficient!
To make you fell better my Tacoma is getting about 12 right now.

Fuel injection will accomplish this and its not difficult to do anymore.

I had this exact truck in high school except in K20 4x4. I bought from my dad after I got my license.
Same year, power and color. Had the tailgate with elec window rather than rear panel doors. If only I was a bit wiser then, I'd still have it now.
Gas will flow through that 454 like there is a hole in the tank. I believe many of these had a 40 somemthing gal tank like the diesels as an option. Either way, awesome ride and plenty of power for your towing needs.

Had an 85 Silverado with the dual tanks. Loved that thing.

What are you going to be towing? That's a sweet classic at this point, but if you are routinely towing something like a 4000lb boat why buy an 80s car? Technology is so much better now that just doesn't seem enjoyable to me to use it for anything but basic pleasure rides or a beater car like people talk about going to their camp in.

I'll be towing a bass boat all over Alabama.
My buddies all have brand new diesels. I get to drive them some and back them in at tournaments. I hate everything about them. I don't want a truck with a 12" LCD screen, power everything, and a computer chip in every part of the truck. This one has the old school radio with the push buttons and the orange needle that moves to the station. I won't be changing it. The only way this could be better is if the windows were manual instead of power.

Definitely swap it over to a throttle body fuel injection setup. They are basically bolt-on and you'll have a much more drivable vehicle. Fuel mileage will be better, no cold weather struggles, automatic altitude compensation, etc etc. There's no reason not to, I think the systems are like $1500 and with today's fuel prices that will pay back pretty quickly depending on how much you drive it.
I get what you're saying about the old stuff being simple, but fuel injection is better than a carb in every way including serviceability.

I’m in the middle of rebuilding my old truck, and it has manual windows. My little nephew was in town and was out there watching me, and I notice him staring at something with a confused look on his face. He then asked “What is that???” and walked up to the door, pointing at the handle to roll the window up. I showed him how it worked, and he was absolutely mindblown. Was an interesting moment, it seemed so primitive to him as a 6 year old

Cousin had a late 70 or early 80 square body with that blue color he drove to high school in early 80’s. He’d pick me up on fridays from kindergarten and drive to my grandmothers.
Wish he’d have kept it

LS1 swap.
Yeah the 454 sounds way cool, but a 35yo 454 makes less power and uses far more gas. If you're going very far on the highway, swap it and keep the 454 on a skid in your garage.

Any particular brand you'd recommend? DuckDuckGo says there are a bunch of options......

Nah. I've played with a holley sniper system before and another one that I cant recal the name of. They're all pretty much the same thing as far as I know. Just stay away from the race stuff and get one that's made for tow rigs

I had a 94 Suburban and my buddy had one just like this one. We called it "Big Blue". Only difference was it did not have the 454. All of our sons were in scouts and we could fit 2 adults and 6 boys with all of our backpacks in each when we would do our backpacking in the Sipsy Wilderness and Mt. Cheaha here in Alabama. Great times!

Brought it home from ATL yesterday. 454 purred like a kitten, but there is a bunch of work to be done. Interior was better than I thought and the exterior was worse than I thought. Oh well.
I'm $5500 in right now. She's at the shop getting fluids changed, brakes checked, carb timed up, and hopefully getting some of the play out of the steering wheel. Focusing the first stage of this project on mechanical stuff. I'll start on cosmetics later. I'll post some pics as I go along.

Fwiw this is something most people don’t realize is normal for older vehicles. Vehicles now are made to a lot tighter tolerances then in the 80s and before. One of the reasons they last longer, things don’t wear out as fast due to better fit. It very well maybe something that can be fixed, but generally speaking older vehicles just have some play where newer ones rarely do.

Just got off the phone with my mechanic. Here's the list of must-do mechanical items:
Pitman arm, idler arm, front end alignment, front brake pads and rotors along with a front right caliper and hose, parking brake hose line replaced, oil change/filter, (4) new tires, headlight adjusting screws, adjust carb, and pinion seal. Total: $3100.
This should get me running. They have about $1500 worth of other shite I'm putting off until next month (AC, window motors, etc). The good news is that the motor and the transmission both check out which are the big ticket items.
