Some guy above is claiming they only stopped there for fuel and a tune up.
I kinda feel bad for him. He’s read some revisionist history, fell for the bullshite the author was peddling, and now has a mistaken sense of knowledge.
Had he a better understanding the of Pacific Campaign, technical details of the B29, and a nominal grasp of the geography of the Pacific Ocean he would have not fallen for the revisionist lie.
I’m honestly embarrassed for him.

We should have just waited and nuked the island. We were hitting their supply lines so hard they would have all starved or ran out of resources on the home island.

We didn’t even know if the atomic bomb would work until July 1945. And until they tested it they weren’t even sure how powerful it would be. Estimates ranged from it not even going off to it blowing up the entire planet. It would have been foolish to sit back doing nothing before we knew if it would work.

I just finished reading Hell in the Pacific by Jim McEnery. Boy, did he hate “Dugout” Doug. Especially for Peleliu.

Huh? Those seem like the exact positions you should bypass if possible.
Seems counterintuitive to leave a capable enemy at your backside

For instance...the Bockscar, after dropping Fat Man on Nagasaki, was forced to make an emergency landing on Iwo Jima.
Bockscar made an emergency landing on Okinawa after dropping Fat Man, not IJ.

Listing to the latest HCH podcast as I can't help but think why the hell did we even mess with those islands. The japs had no boats to get off of them or aircraft left. Leave a destroyer or two just in case and bypass all that shite, let them starve.
Downvoted for changing the title, and island, 2 hours after starting the thread.

Because they couldn't even make it to Iwo.

So an argument can be made for Iwo, the airfields, others not soo much. Hence why I changed the title, so there are no arguments for.

Peleliu was a waste. Not necessary for the Philippines campaign. The Marine Corps still holds a grudge about the carnage that island caused.
The Philippines themselves are a different matter. Not every decision during war is strictly military. Politics do play a part. Besides, unlike other islands, the PI was a possession of the United States prior to Pearl Harbor and were obviously a strategic asset after the war. It made sense to directly take them back to maintain Philippine/American relations in peacetime.
This is important to remember, and I’d add that the Filipinos themselves were about as tough an enemy the Japanese had outside the major powers. Their guerrillas were fanatical, ardently pro-American, and didn’t hesitate to match the Japanese in brutality if needed. There were also a non-negligible amount of Americans still fighting in the jungles there with the Filipinos. We really did owe the Philippines a true liberation.

Yes but we did not know that in that stage of the war. We could only estimate.

A LOT of both Marines & Army ground troops hated Dugout Doug. An uncle who fought in the island hopping campaigns would never speak his name without saying his name this way: "that M.fricking Dugout Mac Arthur". Nimitz was 100% against "fighting for each & every piece of grass in the Pacific ".
Posted on 7/17/21 at 12:47 pm to GREENHEAD22
McArthur wanted his arse covered when he was going back to The Philippines. He didn’t need it but insisted having those airfields that were never really used.

MacArthur may be our most overrated General.
In US history.
In US history.

That's what I am assuming, shame we couldn't have better realized it. Saved thousands of lives and and spirits and souls from emotional scars.

Because that wouldn't benefit the Democrat MIC

I think we had a moral obligation, and a debt of honor to the Philippinos.
Posted on 7/17/21 at 1:06 pm to GREENHEAD22
Think the Japanese were harassing Allied aircraft from the island.

Well, regardless of what any of you say, either way, I'll tell you what my father said who landed there and remained until the end.
MacArthur's ego caused thousands of young men to die for no reason.
Peleliu was a waste of time, manpower, resources, and lives.
My father and grandmother both said they were happy when Truman fired MacArthur. And if not for Truman dropping the bombs, thousands more of American lives would have been lost.
frick y'all, stay off my lawn.
